Best way to get the smallest file that the quality requires?

229Mick wrote on 2/3/2018, 5:21 PM

I'm working on a project converting DVR files to files for my plex media server. The real goal is to just remove the commercials and save them. I want maintain the quality, because these recordings are played on 60" TVs, but the original *.ts files are about 3.5G and 1 hour, but the edited MP4's with the commercials removed are just under 7G and 40min.

I've only used Vegas for small projects from my go pro's etc before, so I've never noticed this, but I expect there's got to be a way to maintain the quality but reduce the size a bit.

I'm using the 'MainConcept AVC/AAC MP4' 'internet 1080p for the file type.

Any suggestions, tips or recommendations are eagerly welcomed!

Thanks!

My tool of choice is VideoRedo. Its got a commercial finder/cutter, and will repair broadcast stream errors that can otherwise make your recordings useless for editing.

You can then compress the files to mp4 as wanted or leave them untouched for size and quality. There is a free trial.

Yea, the main reason I'm using vegas is because the timing is off a little and the last 30-60 seconds of the show is on the beginning 30-60 seconds of the next recording. So I looked at VideoRedo and it appears to work (until I tried to save, complained about the ac3 codec) but it'd still leave me without the end of each show, so I don't think it'll be a viable solution. Thanks again!

The cheaper version (Videoredo +) will probably do everything you want.

Next time asked, the full MediaInfo report will be appreciated too (huge hint).!

Videoredo should stitch, combine and trim your files perfectly, even tha last 60 seconds!

Did you try the Joiner?

Vegas won't come close to mending discontinuous GOPs unless you are incredibly lucky with Device Explorer. Choose the right tool for the job.

Oh, I didn't realize it was that capable, I though ti was just for single files (no stitching). I'll give it another look! Thanks!!

Long time ago I used to use MPEG Video Wizard (it's not free) for editing my mpeg2 files with simple cutting/joining. The UI was awful (comparing to Vegas), but "render" was very fast and there were no quality loss as the only tiny pieces were re-encoded.

I have not tried the program with .ts files so they might require re-muxing first.

If you look closely at your save options, you can pass through the ac3 audio.

Been doing it this same way since 2011 for educational institutions; and it works perfectly with my new mpeg-2/AC3 transport stream DVR.

You would need the more expensive version for AVC transport streams, which are part of the MPEG-2 standard! Better to ask than guess.

However, YMMV

For VideoRedo support questions, do ask on their forum.

Yea, I'll definitely dig in a little deeper. I just underestimated the functionality of it, thinking it was JUST to trim individual files. Thanks again!
