Black Preview when using "Production" hand-brake transcoded videos.

Trogdor8freebird wrote on 11/21/2022, 2:05 PM

I chose the production preset to edit more smoothly but scrubbing through it's 99% black in the preview window. Disabling GPU processing doesn't work (though even if it did, that probably wouldn't help since my goal is to transcode footage to edit more smoothly). I reset Vegas Pro and deleted cached data, which also didn't work. Afterwards, I re-enabled the deprecated features "Allow legacy GPU rendering" and "Enable the Quicktime plugin", which also didn't solve the issue. I've had the K-lite Codec Pack and x264vfw installed as well. Sometimes me alt-tabbing, waiting, and alt-tabbing back will just make it start previewing correctly for a few seconds in seemingly random parts of the video. I think it's fair to say it's definitely not a corrupted video issue, as the videos play back perfectly fine using any video player I've attempted it on and this editing issue has occurred on both occasions where I transcoded videos using the production preset.

Here's some info on one of the videos being used. I'd really like to get this to work because handbrake is fast and it will be annoying to get some videos transcoded if I can't use handbrake to do it

I also use the Production Standard template and it works well. Can you share a screenshot of your settings in Handbrake?

For MediaInfo that screen doesn't really help. You need to paste in the details. Instructions: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

"Allow legacy GPU rendering" and "Enable the Quicktime plugin", which also didn't solve the issue. I've had the K-lite Codec Pack and x264vfw installed as well.

None of these are relevant for AVC. I'd unselect them for now.

For the 3070 try the latest Studio driver.

You may be using an all-Intra setting in Handbrake. That's really no joy for editing, and if you want lossless, there are better ways than x264. Provide the full MediaInfo report as Roger requested.

Thanks. I don't know which settings you'd like to see so here's a couple screenshots. Everything's also off in the filters tab.

if you want lossless, there are better ways than x264.

What ways do you have in mind? Typically I transcode to a Prores preset in VP but not all footage I get can be put into VP.

The High Intra profile, which we rarely see in the wild, has not been compatible in previous versions of Vegas. TBH I haven't tested it in VP20 bc there are better ways to skin a cat.

  • Shutter Encoder. It's free, and has everything you could possibly want for transcoding.
  • Happy Otter Scripts, a versatile set of import and encoding tools from one of our own members.

Here are settings I used in Handbrake based on Production Standard which seem to work in Vegas. You can decrease the RF a bit for higher quality. The keyint is intended to be 1 second and based on my normal footage which is 24fps. I see this clip was from a phone that was 30fps.
