Blank (black) video in random places when rendering

Lift wrote on 11/10/2019, 9:14 PM

I'm using version 16 (Build 142) and when I render videos, in the output file sometimes I get part of the video where it's just a black screen. It's not consistent or predictable, even rendering the same project twice using the same encoding settings will produce different results. It's a royal pain because I end up with a video that's 20-40 minutes long that may or may not have anywhere from a few seconds to 30 minutes of blank video. (Good luck finding it, but your viewers all will after you've published.) It also shows video in the preview screen as it is rendering to the output file. It's somehow being lost in the encoding process. I have other rendering/encoding software on this PC (handbrake, videostudio, OBS) and Vegas is the only one that does this.

Is this a known issue and is there a fix for it?

I'm using (various) HEVC or H264 codecs and bitrates, NVenc, QSV, etc etc, trying to find something that consistently does not have these problems, but with no luck so far. (And also is uploadable to youtube, and also doesn't make a gigantic file that takes all day to upload.) My system is:

Core i7-4790K @ 4,0 GHz, 32 GB RAM, GTX 1070. (All stock, no overclocking, no special cooling or anything.)

I also have had this happening on several versions of nvidia drivers, including the latest (441.12) as of this post.

The problem occasionally crops up. Have a look at this from Nick. Whilst written for Vegas Pro much also applies to VMS. I'd try turning off GPU processing for a start.

Thanks, I had already turned off GPU acceleration in the preferences, and as I mentioned I tried all of the encode modes for AVC and HEVC.

I did notice that it seemed more reliable if I had just rebooted before rendering. But "more" isn't sufficient. It doesn't help if I can't trust it, and the only way to re-check is so spend a very large amount of time either rewatching every single video I publish, or trying to slide through the video and hope I don't miss its screwups. If the video is blank, the filesize is affected, so the bitrate for those segments would be either very tiny or zero, so they could at least add some way to scan the output for this condition if their rendering is going to be so unreliable.

lift, try this free tool

https://www.videohelp.com/software/Bitrate-Viewer-2

load your file and look for any drop , there is your black.

I am running nearly the same system specs, no black frames here. 4k 60p is used almost daily for rendering tests.

There is hope, so don't limit your expectations with statements like "if their rendering is going to be so unreliable."

This may help, it's a troubleshooting problem, nothing worse. Welcome to the forum.

Section C1 and C2 are required for support. To be thorough, include both input and output file properties.

Yes it will be interesting to find what the source footage is and what VMS is using to decode it.

IMO unreliable is generous. It lies to me by telling me it was successful when it actually failed. Even "crashes with no error message" is better than this.

Here's info from some source files. A couple of notes:

1- I was using 30 fps for capture rate. I tried switching frame rates because Vegas insists on 29.97 output when encoding HEVC. (I don't know why, because I can render 30p HEVC with other software.) It didn't help.

B- I just switched from recording 1 audio track to 3. (It didn't have any effect either way but I wanted to mention it since I'm sure it will be noticed and commented on.)

3- my recording software is OBS.

Here are the settings I use. My choices for Encode Mode are Intel QSV, NV Encoder (which both do this black screen thing) and Mainconcept HEVC, which fails before it even starts randering, with a messagebox that says "An error occurred while creating the media file [filename]. The reason for the error could not be determined."

lift, try this free tool

https://www.videohelp.com/software/Bitrate-Viewer-2

load your file and look for any drop , there is your black.

Thanks for the link. Before I saw this I ended up writing my own program that would grab screenshots. With the amount of time this is wasting, it might be faster to write my own renderer, too.

@Lift

The file in your dropbox is I think not the file @Musicvid was asking for.
We believe you that you get black frames, this file looks a rendered file that went wrong.
To proof your files we need only a vf projectfile and some short pieces of your sourcefiles you can all together put into 1 map that you have to upload. So we can try to do the same render as you do.

Again, OBS recordings work perfectly in VP14 here. There is nothing in your source properties that doesn't work here, like every day.

I had already turned off GPU acceleration in the preferences

Were you sure to try turning off "GPU Acceleration of Video Processing" at that time?

it might be faster to write my own renderer, too.

In your case, it might be. I'm sure the developers would be intrigued to see your code.

How many games do you record at indistinguishable quality with hardware encoding? Some of my output files hit 50Mbps bitrates. I've found that in some cases where it's blanking, the titles are still present in the output file. It may be that the source file is not being decoded, and the renderer just doesn't care whether or not that operation was successful. Maybe at higher bitrates the decoding takes longer, and they're using an asynch operation for the decoding and just assuming it's always completed by the time they try to encode a video frame.

Ya, I plan to do that when I get a source file that is not huge. :)

  1. Zero. The black frames appear in the source?
  2. Mine too. How do they look with a software encoder?

No black frames in the source, the source files are good. The blank parts are in the output only, and appear in different places with each re-render. Most often the video never recovers and the entire remainder of it is blank. Occasionally it will go blank for a minute or two and then come back.

Also I got a short clip taken on my phone today that failed twice, and I've uploaded the project. (No this is not my youtube content, yes it's horrible video, on par with Vogon poetry.) It Failed once at 2:52.26, blank for remainder of video. Second time at 00:52.14 for a few seconds, and then at 00:58.10 for the rest of the video. On the third attempt it was successful. I didn't change anything in Vegas or even restart it between renders, I just hit "render" again with all the same settings and everything, curious to see what resulted. So I think it's safe to say it isn't specific to an output setting or what recorded the video. Also of note the bitrate was very mild here, so I don't think my above theory is very likely.

I'm not sure what good the uploaded project will do. I'm reasonably certain that someone who downloads and renders it will get good results. (Ignoring the fact that it's a boring school report, that is, but the blank frames will only be happening to me.)

Nothing wrong with that file, although for earlier versions those big differences in the variable framerate (22,016 till 30,664) could give problems, but on my laptop no problem for VMS16 with these settings

from what I saw on the rendered file no problems but I looked not all of it.

See here the screenvideo of the render

This is the rendered file in my dropbox:

So all that was just to confirm that, obviously, this is something specific to my PC and there's no fix, and Magix doesn't acknowledge this problem nor care about it.
