Cannot Add or View .MTS video in Movie Studio 17

CJ.Bower wrote on 3/2/2021, 3:23 PM

When I try to add a .MTS video file created by a Sony camcorder, Vegas Studio 17 crashes.

Vegas Studio 14 and the same .mts file works without a problem. The same .mts file works on my laptop with Studio 17.

When I navigate to Add media Vegas Studio 17 crashes:

Problem Description
   Application Name:    Movie Studio Platinum
Application Version: Version 17.0 (Build 204)
   Problem:             Unmanaged Exception (0xe06d7363)
   Fault Module:        C:\WINDOWS\System32\KERNELBASE.dll
   Fault Address:       0x00007FF894D0FC9C
   Fault Offset:        0x000000000006FC9C

Note: When Vegas crashes, it occurs the instant I click on the file, as if just 'reading' the file causes the problem. (e.g.: I can navigate to the directory with the file, and see the file in the window, but if I interact (like to simply click on it for selection, not even to open it) that action causes the violation. Also, when I drag the .mts video over the Vegas window, the .mts file turns to the "No" symbol (a circle with a line through it.)

My desktop PC is Windows 10 (Home, Insider, Build 21322), nVidia GTX 1650 Super Driver 465.51 (Current)

I have installed Vegas on a laptop (Windows 10 Home, 2004, Build 19041.804) and do not have a problem. I compared the "Components" in Vegas-Help-About and they are identical.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting?

Mts files are common and not normally a problem. Since you find they are handled okay on other pcs then obviously there is something causing conflict.

Give us full details of your problem pc in particular processor and gpu.

Are both of your versions Movie Studio Platinum?

CJ.Bower wrote on 3/5/2021, 12:27 AM

They are both the same (recently upgraded) license and I downloaded them directly from Magix. My first (original) Vegas Studio was Platinum (6), but these are the current version of Vegas Studio Suite.

I opened a ticket with support and will post information if I see anything of value. I am hoping to find the specifics of this problem rather than reimage this PC, I figure others may encounter a similar issue.

Have you tried reset the VMS?

I have the same problem. I have downloaded MTS files from you Sony HD HandyCam for years. It also used to work on my Vegas Movie Studio 16.0 Platinum. Yesterday I upgraded to v17 and it still does not work. What is going on here. Why is is that there is no way to speak to anyon on the phone about this?

What is going on her? I have always loaded MTS files in the past with no problem.

As mentioned above mts files are common and not usually a problem.

Can you post one of your problem files to a cloud service such as Google Drive so others can download and try.

Huston-Ludlum, way back, VMS16 also dropped support for mts in win7 just few months after it was out.

Same problem here, program will not import .mts files, this worked just few weeks ago, also updated to v 17 but to no help. I opened a ticket and will see if there is any resolution or help from magix

Thank you all for your quick help.  I want to update this thread in case others have the same or similar problems.  Here is what I found...

I searched the internet as my time permitted.  At first, I suspected a problem with Vegas.  Then, I looked to the CODECs and such.  I reimaged my PC (which I wanted to do anyway).  Finally, I investigated the NTFS security on the files.

I then noticed an offer to upgrade Vegas Pro 18 at a price I could not refuse.  I installed Vegas Pro 18, tried adding the same files, and was shocked to see I *still* could not add my MTS media.  (Again, this is a fresh Windows 10 image, with current  firmware all driver updates, etc.)

Finally, I saw a reference related to Adobe regarding MTS and Audio problems.  It appears there is a dispute regarding the licensing of this technology by Dolby.

I then checked an old file recorded in 2 channel PCM Stereo and it worked as expected.  I then recorded a test clip using 2 channel stereo and verified it works as expected in Vegas.  I double-checked by recording a new clip with 6 channel AC3 (Dolby) and confirm the problem.

I now understand Vegas no longer supports AC3 encoding, at least encoded in 6 channels by my Sony Handycam.

My solution:

1.) Moving forward, I never really needed the 6 channel audio; I will now record in 2 channel stereo.

2.) I have successfully converted (~lossless) my existing incompatible .MTS to a format Vegas will recognize using an old Wondershare UniConverter I obtained many years ago.  I believe FFMPEG is the core technology, and I suspect my results may be obtained with that freeware program.  I will post the settings I used in UniConverter to achieve results that appear virtually lossless.

I hope this helps...

CJ, Avidemux will convert 1min AC3 mts file to AAC in 2 seconds.
