cannot open/edit some mp4 files in VMS Platinum 9.0b build 92

dale-weiss wrote on 11/19/2020, 7:39 AM

I am trying to edit a dozen files into a single video, but whenever I try to add a few of the mp4 files to my project, I get this message "an error occurred during the current operation. An exception has occurred." and the program crashes. Most mp4 files open fine. All of the videos (both the ones I CAN open and also the ones I CANNOT open) were created with the same camera. The files that I cannot open are not especially larger or smaller that other mp4 files that I can edit successfully. I am able to play these files using other software (VLC Media player).

Windows 10, surface pro laptop 64 bit (I just noticed that the software is 32 bit--could that be the problem??)

Example file here

Any suggestions on how to successfully open these files in Vegas? thanks

Details below - I notice "Jriver" software listed below. I use this for audio files. NO video file types are associated with Jriver. Maybe there is some conflict with how Vegas handles the the audio track?:

Just update to 9.0c, which has better, but by no means complete support for AVC/ MP4.

Much appreciated--that was the first thing looked for--an update to my software, but I do not see anywhere to download it. Can you point me in the right direction. I will keep looking...

@dale-weiss

I am sorry, I may have been wrong. I was thinking about Vegas Pro 9.0c, and I don't know what updates there may be for Movie Studio Platinum.

Regardless, you have ten year old software, and it would be a good time to trial the latest version.

I agree with Musicvid. This is a very old piece of software. HD video was barely a technology then and MP4s were only sporadically supported. If you're trying to edit MP4s from a phone, you're pushing the program way beyond its design. Give the current version a test drive. It may well solve your problems. Save version 9 for tape-based videos like miniDV and HDV.

Done! I bought v16 and all is well. Thanks everyone!
