Capture NTSC is good, PAL video is rolling

I'm using Vegas Pro 14, Canopus 110, and a Sony CCD-TRV69E - PAL Hi8 camcorder.

For the NTSC tapes we use a Sony deck plugged into the Canopus box and we have no trouble.

For PAL tapes we use the camcorder plugged into the Canopus. On the capture window in Vegas we get the audio, correct color, and the image but it is constantly rolling. For setup, we switched the Canopus dip switch 6 to on (PAL) and everything else is left off (this was done with power off). In Vegas vidcap we also changed the Capture preferences under the capture tab we checked the box and set "custom frame rate" from NTSC to PAL and under the preview tab we left the "pixel aspect" automatic.

What am I missing?

Sounds like you’ve done everything correctly. Can you Preview the PAL tape in the PAL Camera? Is it rolling there?

I’m scratching an ancient AV<>DV brain cell here.... Try playing the PAL video before activating VidCap. Once you going activate VidCap. I have/had to do this with capturing VHS tapes. I’m trying here 😉 !

I just tried activating the camcorder and then bring up Vegas and then the vidcap....no change. Just in case I also rebooted the PC and tried the process again....no change.

How does the Preview in the PAL camera look like?

The camcorder preview is perfect.

Scenalyzer is still available for download. Suggest you compare it against Sony Capture and report back if the problem persists.

I am late to the conversation here, ,but you mentioned that for SETUP you switched #6, #5 is SETUP #6 is format. Make sure you have them both set correctly. Otherwise, it should work unless your camera is actually already converting the PAL to NTSC.

Duh!  Turns out the tape we thought was PAL was NTSC.

Works fine now with NTSC settings!

Glad you worked it out.

So, you put that NTSC tape into the PAL camera and it previewed well? Correct?

john-romein wrote on 11/25/2017, 10:23 AM

Yes, the PAL camcorder plays back NTSC tapes....it just outputs the signal in PAL. Somehow I got it into my head that the tape was PAL.
