hi,

I am using a 2006 sony vaio laptop with an ilink jack and trying to get a sony hdr fx1 camcorder I got the same year to be recognized using vegas 8.I followed all the steps correctly on screen and in the hdr pamphlet but its not recognizing the device.I'm trying to digitize older hdv tapes and any help would be appreciated.I also use an Asus desktop with vegas 12 and windows 10.1 but would need to add a firewire port/card to it if I cant use the laptop.thanks

Is your quicktime updated to the latest version on the laptop?

Also, I'd try resetting the preferences back to default on your Vegas 8.

And I would also download a trial of Vegas pro 18 and see if it's a program compatibility issue or if it's a hardware issue.

thanks for your reply.I havent gone online with the laptop for many years (still use the xp)and just use it for some other editing.I was able to get vegas to recognize the camcorder about 12 years ago to digitize part of a tape.I set the prefs back to default on vegas 8,no luck.Under the capture preferences it says "device not available" but shows the device type as IEEE 1394/mpg2-TS Device

2006 laptop: You may need to reinstall the firewire driver if you have updated to W10. Standard W10 driver does not work. You need the older legacy firewire driver. There are links to the driver within this forum. Contributer 'Musicvid' recently posted a link to the driver. Use search facility found on forum login page. Good luck.

Thank you both very much for the info.I still am running XP on my 2006 laptop so I will have to find a way to test the cable I have and the port on my fx1 first. If I add a firewire card/port to my pc running W10 I will follow the instructions in the link, but if I can get the laptop to recognize the cam I'll just use that with vegas 8

Unless yòur camera is recognised within then windows device manager vegas. R click my computer>>manager>>device manager. Usually pc will 'ping when camcorder is connected. Usual precautions when connecting firewire devices. Just tested on virtual XP within W10.
