Change Proxy Video Quality/File Size Settings? (Lower Quality)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to make proxy files in a lower quality and smaller file size (and hopefully speed up the time to build the proxy files.)

  • For example, 5 GB of video took 30 minutes to create proxy files. (video footage from iPhone 4k 30fps .mov)
  • Also the proxy files are 115% larger than original video files.
  • 1GB of video (.mov) will result in the proxy files to be 1.15GB (.sfvp0)

Is there a setting or option to change the proxy video quality?

No problems if not, just thought I'd ask.

Windows 10 / Vegas Pro 16

Thanks in advance!

There are scripts like Happy Otter and Vegassaur that have their own proxy systems that let you specify your render settings, but to the best of my knowledge, Vegas native proxy is mxf 720p only.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

Natively Vegas only produces Proxies at 1280x720p resolution in XDCAM EX format with font specific frame rate, but there are external developer tools that allow you to choose Proxy settings.

Just a side note: Internal proxies are XDCAM EX 1280x720, not MXF (and not MP4). Frame rate is source adapted.

Hi everyone,

Hello, i happily use the freely available xmedia recode to make proxies of my 1440p game videos in a directory/GAME-VIDEO/Proxy directory and then i use the Project Media tab Swap Videos functions whenever i edit and then swap back before rendering. Also dont forget to swap project properties (resolution).

If you will provide the MediaInfo and Vegas properties for both source and proxy files, there should be some deeper interest.

The 720p mpeg-2 format used is the same format I chose and have used for manual proxies, short prerenders, and for screening rough cuts for a lot longer than automatic proxies have been around. I felt concurrence when Magix chose the same format in XDCAM wrapper for its auto proxy feature.

That said, the reason I chose 720p HDV back then is because of its superior timeline handling, acceptable quality, and quick renders, not shoe size alone, although I know it's a concern in the 4k jungle. With 2TB drives on sale as low as $50 US, temporary storage space needs not be such a concern as it was.

A small-footprint, agile handling, fast render, top quality solution is a great wish. Unfortunately, it hasn't been invented yet; we still have to rob Peter to pay Paul.

If I was to choose a slower, but smaller proxy format that handles reasonably well with excellent quality, my hands-down choice would be x264 720p at Main Profile (HOS), which is pretty slick on current systems. It is still quite possible to do manual proxies in Vegas.
