Codec to .mov play clip generated by NDI Studio Monitor?

jeffagwm wrote on 5/14/2021, 11:06 AM

I am getting into the world of NDI and have just downloaded the NDI tools package. I am testing recording from my camera using NDI Studio Monitor. The clips being recorded are .mov format. They playback fine in VLC, they play in Adobe Premiere 2021, but they will not play in Vegas Pro 18 (Build482). Anyone know how to fix this issue? are there updated codecs for Vegas?

An even better solution would be to be able to record from an NDI device directly into the Vegas timeline like we used to be able to do years ago with the Video Capture feature

Many thanks

Maybe. Provide your file properties and we'll find out what's different.

The sample clip won't load, maybe it is too big. not sure. But the codec info is shown in the previous post. It seems that Vegas will not handle the SHQ2 codec, even though it is installed on my system.

Upload sample clips to Drive or Dropbox, not the forum or youtube.

Looks like a proprietary codec; may want to try ffmpeg.

I edit my NDI recordings with VP14.

Here are some more options:

@jeffagwm So, according to @rvitucci's post you can use the Tricaster export tool to export to Prores. VP18 now handles Prores very well.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I am not using Tricaster, so I don't have access to the export tool. I am trying to start using NDI (Network Device Interface) compatible gear to enable video and audio over a network. (think Dante for video). It allows any camera on the network to be seen as an input on any capture device/switcher/laptop on the same network. Newtek developed the protocol, but now there is gear from multiple other brands that have an NDI port.

For more info on NDI - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_Device_Interface

It is a shame that V14 can handle the video but V18 can't. I wonder if that is something than can be fixed? Yes, I have Adobe Premiere and can go that way but I have been with Vegas since V3 and would prefer to stick with it if possible. Maybe for now I will try running through Handbrake and see if the files are still ok quality wise.

We don't know that. We only have anecdotes from two users, and until you provide that upload, I cannot test and confirm or deny either of your reports. I have both VP14 and VP18 running, and have lengthy production experience.

Here is a link to a short test file recorded using the NDI Studio Monitor Desktop application.

On my system (Win 10 Pro, Vegas 18) the clip will open and play in VLC, Adobe Premiere, and in Vegas 14, but not in Vegas 18. The codec info is as shown earlier in this thread.

@jeffagwm
Do you have Quicktime installed on your system and is the Quicktime component enabled for Vegas Pro in Options/Preferences/Deprecated Features?

Also, do you have the NewTek Windows codecs installed?

jeffagwm wrote on 5/17/2021, 6:06 PM

Marco, Many thanks for that pointer. I do have Quicktime installed, but it the Quicktime component was not enabled in the Deprecated Features. I checked that box, restarted Vegas, and the file plays. The question now is why is that feature deprecated. My concern is that features that have been Deprecated will soon go away altogether.

Musicvid wrote on 5/17/2021, 6:10 PM

Here is your answer, and thank you for following the upload instructions.

  • Without the codec installed, the file opens in VP14 with audio only.
  • Without the codec installed, the file opens in VP18 with audio only, with the legacy Quicktime 7 enabled.
  • With the codec installed, the file opens in VP14, With video and audio.
  • With the codec installed, the file opens in VP18, with video and audio, with the legacy Quicktime 7 enabled.

Here is the proof:

To enable the legacy Quicktime codec in VP18, go to Preferences->Deprecated Features. Going forward, thanks in advance for reserving judgment.

It is doubtful the legacy QT codec will go away soon, since many 32 bit QT file formats are still in use.

Because Apple has discontinued QuickTime for Windows?

Cool, Thx M!!

VP17 is good to go now too.
