extracting material from DVDs AND Bluray

JohnJ wrote on 8/24/2016, 3:21 AM

Hello,

I have produced DVDs and Blurays in the past using various versions of Vegas Pro (currently 13). Now I want to extract some material from these so that I can produce compilations, is it possible to extract part of a DVD or Bluray without having to upload the entire disc? If so, would someone kindly advise me how to do it?

Thanks, Johnj

Upload?

Thanks, but how can I upload (say) 10 minutes from a DVD lasting 1 hour?

The common word is "rip," but i understand what you mean.

Short of encoding a time range from the dvd first, say in Videoredo or Handbrake, just ripping the whole thing is your best option and a lot quicker.

It's obviously best if you can edit from the original media and Vegas project files that you used to create the DVD, but it sounds like you don't have those any longer.

If your DVD was not encrypted (which is likely if it was a "burnt" DVD) then you can copy the .VOB files from its VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive and open them directly on the Vegas timeline to edit. Your Vegas project will even match to the media properties if you have it set to do that. Or if you have the original DVD folders that you created when you authored the DVD then the files are already on your hard drive.

Similarly if your Blu-ray was not encrypted then you can copy the .m2ts files from its BCMV/STREAM/ folder to your hard drive and edit them directly on the Vegas timeline.

If your DVD was encrypted (likely if it was a mass-production "pressed" DVD) then you'll have to rip it. I have used DVD Decrypter in the past but most guides such as this one now seem to refer to Handbrake etc..

The last time I looked (a couple of years ago) I couldn't find a way to rip encrypted Blu-rays but might be possible somehow by now.

Thank you, everyone, that tells me what I need to know

you can copy the .VOB files from its VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive and open them directly on the Vegas timeline to edit.

The VOB files are essentially MPEG2 files but if more than 1GB in size they are cut into chunks no more than 1GB in size before putting onto a DVD. If you just drag the VOB chunks to the timeline you will get a glitch at each join. There are many ways to avoid this, such as dragging the IFO file to the Vegas timeline or prejoining the chunks with a file joiner such as igorware file joiner http://www.igorware.com/news/file-joiner-240

Don't include VOB files ending in 0 such as VTS_01_0.VOB

This only applies to DVDs. Blu-ray Discs don't have this problem.

Thanks for this Peter. In a brief test here, based on one set of DVD folders, I found that I had to open VTS_03_0.IFO to get the whole video on the timeline without the joins. It appears that the correct .IFO to open depends on how the DVD was authored, and you have to find the correct one to open by trial and error. I doubt VIDEO_TS.IFO will ever be the correct one to open.

Attn. MAGIX, .IFO should be revealed as an approved media type for Vegas, so that it appears in the "All Project and Media Files" dropdown list when opening files.

Importing IFO file works without any issue.
