Frame rate problem

Jep wrote on 12/8/2017, 6:41 AM

Hi guys,

I'm working with a 29.97fps .wmv file that is giving me problems in Vegas Pro 13.

First I should say that the video appears to be perfect in players like VLC or WMP. Playback at regular speed is very smooth, and if I play through frame by frame each frame appears to be consecutive with no missing or additional frames.

However if I drop the video into my Vegas Pro 13 timeline playback is choppy. If I move through the video frame by frame in Vegas - every 10 frames or so Vegas seems to be duplicating the preceeding frame and interupting smooth playback. Anything I render from this media is compromised in a similar way. This is not a problem with the Preview Quality setting, as it happens at the same points in the video regardless of what preview setting I use.

I have double checked the Media Video Settings are matched to the original media. I have also tried it with Resample set to Smart, Forced, and Disabled, but it is the same for all.

I did find a work-around. I re-encoded the video to .mp4 using XMediaRecode, and the mp4 version plays back flawlessly in Vegas.

I would rather work with the original .wmv file rather than a degraded .mp4 re-encode. I'm baffled as to why Vegas seems unable to handle the .wmv file, and would be grateful for any suggestions as to how I can fix this issue.

TIA

Since my OP above I also tried importing my original wmv media directly into Handbrake and re-encoding it to mp4. When I dropped the resulting mp4 file into a new Vegas Pro project timeline it was perfectly smooth with no duplicate frames as in the original.

It seems to me that as VLC, WMP, XMediaRecode and HandBrake all seem to have no problem with the original media's frames, the problem would appear to lie with Vegas.

I just did a bit of work and found a curious pattern to the duplicate frames in the Vegas timeline - it looks like this:

2,7,2,7,7,2,7 (the sequence then repeats)

every comma between each number represents a frame that is the duplicate of the preceeding frame. Not sure if that information helps diagnose the problem.

I manually cut the repeating frames from a short section in the Vegas timeline, and when output the results were very smooth.

Obviously the best remedy would be to find out why Vegas is creating these duplicate frames and fix that issue. Failing that I wonder is there anyway of automatically removing duplicate frames in Vegas - a script perhaps?

Thanks John. I've just downloaded and installed the latest build (which appears to be 454). Anyway, it hasn't made any difference. Everything appears to be just as it was.

I'm stumped.

Your WMV file was encoded in TMPGEnc?

What's up with that?

I'm no expert when it comes to TMPGEnc, so I don't know how unusual that might be. But TMPGEnc can be used to output wmv files. Have a look at this link http://help.pegasys-inc.com/en/tvmw6/06350.html

It's just not a good format for delivery or editing, and whoever went to all that trouble should have known that.
