H.264 video codec only supports resolutions up to 4K (True or False)

Vimeo video compression guidelines say, "Please note that the H.264 video codec only supports resolutions up to 4K.". Is that true? Below is the URL. So if you want to deliver 8K, is H.265 the codec of choice?

H264 is capable of supporting 8K, but the specific codec has to support it too.

VP19 seems to allow up to 8192x4320 with either Mainconcept AVC or HEVC.

False.

AVC Level 6.x supports 8k, with the observation that it is scarce as hens' teeth; along with Hi10p Profile it is largely deprecated since h265 / HEVC gained prominence.

Hardware encoding and decoding is not active above 4K for h.264 for most or all GPU's. They most likely expect uploads of these resolutions to be done with a hardware encoder so assisting you in choosing HEVC or a less CPU intensive codec such as prores
