Hi there!
I have many different recordings of gameplay captured with Bandicam, which I am trying to import into Movie Studio Platinum 2016. I used to own Movie Studio Platinum 13, but recently upgraded to Movie Studio Platinum 16. These recordings are of .MP4 file type and are encoded with HEVC (NVIDIA NVENC) using a Variable Frame Rate and for some reason just simply cannot be added into the timeline. They also have two audio tracks, however I've tested all of this with just one audio track and it makes no difference.
These videos open, and function 100% fine in "Movies & TV"(Default Windows Video App) and Windows Media Player,
How I'm trying to add media:
- When I try to drag and drop these recordings into the timeline, they simply don't work and the cross symbol appears.
- If I try to add them via the add media function, it will say "The file is most likely corrupted or of an unknown format.", with the details section showing "File C:\123\abc\example.mp4 could not be opened.".
- If I try and drag content from the explorer, it won't allow it similar to the first dot-point.
When I first would attempt the second and third dot-points, the program would completely crash. No exit message, no send bug report, no "stopped working", it would literally just close - and it would do this every single time consistently, including after completely re-installing MS16 and restarting my PC. For some reason, it stopped crashing and would give me the "The file is most likely corrupted or of an unknown format." message after I updated my Nvidia Drivers and changed from "Game-Ready" to "Studio Driver". The program has not crashed since, but it still can't open the videos.
What I've tried:
- I've tried re-starting my PC, many times and almost after every single one of the below.
- I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled Movie Studio Platinum 16 including deleting leftover stuff in Appdata, making sure all files are completely deleted in Program Files, my presets, everything.
- I've uninstalled and reinstalled the HEVC codec for Windows 10 from the Microsoft Store, including clicking the "Reset" button in the Windows 10 settings.
- I've installed quicktime.
- I've updated my Nvidia drivers and swapped from Game-Ready to Studio-Driver.
- I've tried recording simple videos with the same settings, changing one at a time. For example, I tried once with a Constant Frame Rate, reduced the quality settings, changed the audio settings, etc. Absolutely zero luck.
- I've tried disabling GPU Acceleration, and toggled almost all of the preference settings.
- I've tried renaming parts of the Plug-Ins folder so MS16 can't find them.
- I've tried resetting to default settings with CTRL + SHIFT + Open MS16.
- I've downloaded ffmpeg, and ran the following command:
- ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c:v libx265 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a copy out.mp4
- Which I got from... https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/need-help-dropping-hevc-files-into-vegas-pro-15--109912/#ca678658
- This output file actually worked! When I dropped it into the timeline, the program locked up for a bit and then came up with a message saying "HEVC has been activated" or something very similar.
- I'd much prefer to not convert my videos like this and then add them, as there are so many in addition to the conversion removing the second audio track. I understand that I may get suggestions here to just convert them like this and save the audio tracks with audacity or something, but I would much much rather to focus on just trying to import these already existing files as this may not always be an option for me.
What I would like to try / want help from:
I found this thread... https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-17-bandicam-hevc-files-unsupported--116964/#ca728230 where a user described a similar problem and actually fixed it by first changing to Nvidia Studio Drivers AND changed a Hardware-Decoding setting in their preferences(See the very last post in this thread).
As far as I can tell, this preference is either deprecated or just simply not in Movie Studio Platinum 16... -.-
What specifically I would like some assistance from:
- How can I adjust the setting mentioned in the thread above so that NVDEC is used as the Hardware Decoder?
- I understand that I might be suggested to "just convert" the videos. As explained I do not want to do this, I am trying to import them directly into Movie Studio.
- Can anyone spot any glaring faults in the test.mp4 Mediainfo?
- Anything else I might be able to do to get this to work?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, I'm really not sure what else I can try. Thankyou!
