How to export multiple audio track in VEGAS Pro?

alifftudm95 wrote on 8/15/2021, 4:21 AM

My local broadcast station required 4-8 audio track in final delivery, how do you do that in VEGAS Pro?

I found a tutorial for Resolve, you can pick almost any codecs and still have the ability to export multiple audio track.

*Codec/Format often used for Broadcast is MXF-0P1A/MXF- 0P1Atom, Interlaced, FHD 25FPS.

This is what the broadcast editor told me:

1. Assign each PAIR of tracks for the following:

  • A1-A2: Dialogues (Mono)
  • A3–A4: Ambience(Stereo)
  • A5-A6: Sound Effects (Stereo)
  • A7-A8: Music (Stereo)

in the end, final export:

Channel 1 - Full Mix (L) Channel 2 - Full Mix  Channel 3 - Music Only Channel 4 - Sound Effects

Can I do the same in VEGAS Pro?

MXF-0P1A/MXF- 0P1Atom is the definition of the wrapper, not the codec. I think what they expect is XDCAM HD.

To define your multichannel output you need to assign output busses to your audio tracks, enable multichannel mapping in your render window options and then via the "Channels" button define which bus feeds which channel.

How do you route em to the bus track? I see add bus Track & Input Bus Track?

You add the busses via the Mixing Consol. And you map the tracks to the busses via the audio track headers output options.

I've done that, but I dont see channel mapping options upon rendering?

Btw this is the spec sheet (written in Bahasa Melayu language, scroll to page 15 to see the specs)

So you selected one of the HDCAM HD render presets and enabled the multichannel option in the main render window?

Where do I enabled this? I select the HDCAM preset, but I dont even see "channels" button in the render menu.

Also does exporting multitrack is exclusive for HDCAM codecs?

How bout ProRes? someone in VEGAS Hub FB group asked kinda similar question if he can export multiple audio track with ProRes codec.

Under RENDER OPTIONS, you select ENABLE MUTILCHANNEL MAPPING, then CHANNELS is enabled and you select the channels. Then you have to select in the CODEC AUDIO OPTIONS how many channels you want to output.

fr0sty wrote on 8/15/2021, 9:12 AM

MXF can do multichannel, wav can as well, up to 8 channels, but it's an audio format. Not sure what other video formats vegas supports that can do multichannel.

Panasonic P2 also supports multichannel audio, I think XAVC wrapped in MXF, too. Not sure about AVI. ProRes rendered from Vegas Pro does not (yet).

Vegas doesn't really have any Surround encoders built in (DTS, TrueHD, EAC3, AAC), so the "5.1" designation seen in some Vegas templates is really a misnomer, referring to Discrete 6-ch PCM instead. This means it won't work with 5.1 and 7.1 sound cards, for instance, only 6 discrete I/O channels.

Turd wrote on 8/16/2021, 3:23 PM

...only 6 discrete I/O channels.

Actually, I've gotten as many as 8 discrete I/O channels! Perhaps more are possible, but I've never had a reason to try more than 8.

In my professional broadcast world, I output 8 discrete audio channels as such in an .mxf wrapper:

  1. Left Front (LF)
  2. Right Front (RF)
  3. Center (C)
  4. Low Frequency Effects (LFE)
  5. Left Surround (LS)
  6. Right Surround (RS)
  7. Left Second Audio Programming (L-SAP)
  8. Right Second Audio Programming (R-SAP)

In my personal world, in which I make family vids in .mp4 5.1 surround, my process is as such:

  • Edit my multimedia presentation and render a "normal" .mp4 file with video and stereo audio
  • Re-mix my audio and render a separate multi-channel .wav file according to the first 6 channels I listed above
  • Use the free EncWAVtoAC3 app to convert the multi-channel .wav file to an .ac3 file (the Google machine is your friend)
  • Mux the new .ac3 file to the .mp4 file (Google helps you find many free muxers)
  • Fin
  • Yes, it's A LOT of work for family fun videos, but I really, really enjoy working in surround sound! And, yes, I'm probably the only person in my family who truly appreciates the effort, but it's worth it to me. Just don't ask my wife why it takes so gosh-darned long to edit a home vid.

Note to self (everyone else please look away -- the note that follows is a reminder for mine eyes only): Figure out a clever, kick-booty signature that suggests I'm completely aware of how to properly and exhaustively party on and that I, in fact, engage in said act on a frequent and spontaneous basis. All joking aside, listing my computer's properties is a futile endeavor. I edit multimedia in a local television station newsroom that has Vegas Pro installed on several machines with widely varied specs. We began editing non-linearly with Pinnacle Studio Version 8. That didn't last long before we upgraded to Vegas Video Version 4, then to Vegas Pro 10.

Musicvid wrote on 8/16/2021, 3:43 PM

For cross-rendering encoded surround formats, Handbrake and especially VideoRedo have good options.

Yes, I've read that Vegas can handle up to eight discrete channels, but never had a chance to use it.

Marco. wrote on 8/16/2021, 4:09 PM

Vegas Pro can render up to 32 discrete audio channels if the output format supports it.

I have created 8 channel WAV files in Vegas. Works great.
