How to make yourself more creative?

The Vegas Pro application we always discuss here is still just one tool for editing...

But, the most important is, still, your creative editing, creative cutting...

And love to hear anyone's opinion towards 'Creative'. - How to make yourself MORE creative?

Do it more. Focus on output, not input. Don't waste time on self-help cr*p.

There is a school of thought that says the best technique defines the best artistry.

This approach of course favors substance over style, which can take a long time to develop.

There's quite probably another school that says the best artistry defines the best technique. I guess that would favor style over substance. Which can take a long time to develop.

My two cents: Work without stopping when your in your "flow." When stuck or tired "sleep on it." I often find inspiration (and technical answers) arrive when unconscious. :)

Possibly even longer than interest in the prevailing style would survive.

What a great question!

I think the main thing is to find something that really interests you, research the hell out of it, then put it all into your own words. I find reading quotes very inspiring too. BrainyQuote is a good one.

One time I spoke with Ron Dexter, a cinematographer's cinematographer, http://rondexter.com/ and he recommended reading the book: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. It is literally about drawing, but gets into creativity.

Two books I would highly recommend are The Visual Story by Block and Sight, Sound, Motion by Zettl. I think what people often overlook is the importance of sound in editing and for me, that's another reason why I really like Vegas' capabilities in that regard.
