How To Motion Tracking like a pro?

Geronemo3 wrote on 3/29/2017, 8:12 PM

Hi Guys.
This is my first post. I've been learning how to use Vegas Pro from YouTube for a little while.
I am trying to learn how to do motion tracking and effects of Text.

Please look at following video at around 40 sec into the video the way text appears and disappears and follows the camera movement is what I am trying to learn but haven't come across a tutorial that would explain that in detail.

Please let me know if you guys know how to do that or point me in right direction.

Thanks :)

Look at this

Since this was a smooth dolly shot you could probably get close with keyframes in Vegas.

Practice, practice, practice. And the knowledge on how it works and knowing how to shoot/setup the shot.

The basics are: use software to track your stuff, have something to track, then put your stuff in. The first part is easy, the next two are hard.

Here's a test I did in Vegas with export from Syntheyes using provided tutorial footage:

Here's one I did in Doom 3, which was easy because games have every variable controllable.

Motion tracking can be a while different beast.

BTW, 2d tracking is pretty easy. What you showed was 3D tracking, that's where it gets harder.

Thanks guys.

The problem I am having is I can add a text layer and source alpha to 3D source alpha but the 3D text doesn't have any dept to it. The more I am researching into the matter it seems like most ppl are using different methods like  Adobe After Effects, some others using HitFilm express with Mocha add-on.

I only have Sony Vegas Pro so I am can't use those atm.

If you want something like that video you need a 3D program to model & animate. Blender is free & it should have a motion tracker in the latest version.

Geronemo3 wrote on 3/31/2017, 12:14 AM

I downloaded blender and watched a few tutorials. It seems like a totally new learning curve. I guess I'll spent many hrs. in my free time watching more of it tutorials to see if that's what I am looking for.

Thanks.

Blender is certainly powerful but I'm not sure it is the tool for this job. You might want to investigate Hitfilm Express which is free but I'm not sure whether it can do what you want.

The type of 3D tracking shown in your clip might be possible, if clumsy, in Vegas Pro alone. In one clip create a rectangle of appropriate dimensions and place your text and graphics in it. The rectangle is just there to help match the corners of the smartphone screen in the main clip and can be deleted before rendering. Using track motion, superimpose your rectangle and text over the main clip and adjust the xyz positioning to match the smartphone screen. Use as many keyframes as necessary to track and adjust your overlay to the main clip. Fairly clumsy and time consuming but it might do the trick.

The Blender site says it has object & camera tracking, that's what he wants. I don't believe Hitfilm Express includes an object/camera tracker (some of the plugins with it can track, but no separate tracker).

If the price is right for Blender then learning it should do what he wants. Just an FYI, unless you WANT to spend the time learning a new program, if you're wanting to make $$ of doing this occasionally it would be advise to just pay someone & add that in to your cost.

I also downloaded Hitfilm express in my quest. With Hitfilm I need to buy mocha add-on $50 plus will have to learn to use Hitfilm.

There's a YT video where the hitfilm expert says u can't do it with just hitlfilm express. So I might learn how to use that aswell as it's free but again in my free time.

Having investigated further, HappyFriar is right - Blender can do advanced 3D camera tracking. However be warned, I followed an 8 hour introductory tutorial series on lynda.com on using Blender for animation. It was literally 7 hours in before we got our little animated creature to perform a simple wave.

The (paid) Mocha plugins with BCC and Hitfilm will do the job fairly quickly and easily, but becoming a proficient Blender user certainly opens up a whole range of additional possibilities including adding free ready made 3D animations to  your video. When I get some time I intend to compare the motion tracking capabilities of Blender with those in Hitfilm Pro.

Good luck with your venture.

I leaned Blender to do simple things that were harder/impossible to do in Vegas & I started to love using it. To me, it's an awesome program. I still use v2.49b because it has scripts I use.

Any program you use is going to add a completely new skillset. Dedicate the time and it'll be worth it.

You can also use this free 3d tracker.

Autodesk MatchMover

Interesting... but then, after this, what next? export data to supported 3d application?

I use Hitfilm 4 Express, which is free and can be linked to Vegas.

Hitfilm can import the. ma file created by matchmover and create a 3d camera.

wow, if HF4Express can support it - this is a great news... - thanks for the info :)

From what I've researched and I am new to these things HitFilm Express by itself can't do Motion Tracking and needs Mocha which is either a $50 add-on for Express or comes with full HitFilm purchased version.
I am trying to achieve what u see at 40 sec in the first clip.

My source of info is this clip.

Please let me know if that is accurate.

Thanks

Are u using Mocha as add-on in any program or the $400 full program?

Please do let me know which one and how do u do it?

Thanks
