Huge MP4 files since latest upgrade of Platinum 17 (Build 204)

Hi - I upgraded from 16 to 17 about a month ago and it's been a difficult transition for a number of reasons. But one great thing was that the MP4 files that were being rendered were really small compared to 16. But since the latest update to Build 204 they have become huge! The same short excerpt was 53MB in the previous build but is now 534MB. Am I doing something wrong?? HP Spectre 360 with Windows 10 2004. Thanks for listening!

Which are your render settings?

Adrian-Howe wrote on 11/2/2020, 7:19 AM

They haven't changed since before and after the upgrade, but I'm using 1920x1080x32 25fps

I've checked the properties of the rendered files, though... data rate on the smaller file is 975kbs, total bit rate 1171kbs. After upgrade, data rate is 11705kbs, total bit rate 11901kbs. Is that a clue?

Yes, you are using different settings. MediaInfo will tell you which. Quite possibly you rendered uncompressed.

Your observation may be a classic case of 'post hoc ergo propter hoc'

We get a lot of that here, something to watch out for.

Did you also compare the quality of those MP4 files. There was a bug in the previous build of VMS17, the MP4 render option of VMS17 created MP4 files with a too low bitrate, which means indeed very small filesize but also very bad quality. This bug has been corrected in the latest build of VMS17.

Ah, now that does make sense, because as I say, I made no changes to any of the settings, I simply upgraded. Yes, the file quality in the original version of 17 was very poor, all sorts of artefacts. But I was also having to fight against completely unacceptable picture in picture rendering (even in the newest version) that turned out to need the Intel graphics drivers updating, so I wasn't sure quite what I was comparing like with like. Pity about the file size, though: as I say that was the one good thing about the update to 17 I'd found! Thanks for all your suggestions and help.

You always can make (at least in the Platinum version of VMS) your own MP4 rendertemplate that fits your file size and quality needs. Just remember quality and filesize are depending on the average bitrate settings. Lowering bitrates means less filesize and quality.

Thanks, yes, I think I've learned enough now to dive into that!
