IEEE 1394 Not Visible To VEGAS

I want to capture Digital Video and am trying Vegas Pro 18 on my Windows 8.1 Dell i5.
When I click Capture Video I see this warning:

Your computer uses an unsupported version of the Windows 
operating system. You will still be able to run the software on your
current system, but features are not guaranteed to operate properly,\
and technical support will not be provided. To ensure proper
operation of the software, and to receive technical support for any
problems you encounter, please update your operating system to
Windows 10.

Not sure this warning is the root of my problem.

My problem is that Vegas can't see my Firewire (IEEE 1394) card.

Note: Device Manager does see my Firewire (IEEE 1394) card.

So when I go to capture it says no device is detected.

Can anyone suggest anything that might help? Maybe an older version of Vegas? Does my Camcorder need to be in some special mode other than Playback? Is there some way to see if my Firewire card is even working? If my Firewire cable is bad would that cause these symptoms? Is there another product that would work better?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You need to use the Legacy Firewire Drivers for Vegas to see it. Update your firewire drivers and select Legacy.

Thanks for the quick reply Doug. I did that, using this article. No luck. I also tried the other driver that this same article mentions after step 12. Still no luck. Any thoughts on the other questions in my post? Thanks again. Roy

Does your FireWire card have a TI Chipset?

Also to Musicvid, in recent test I have done, cards with the VIA chipset actually work better than the TI chipset with the Legacy driver. I am working on a update to the article ad hope to have it done later this week.

Windows 8.1 is a transitional 64 bit release. Considering the message, and Vegas Vidcap's apparent anticipation of the issue, would it not be better to let it your computer update to Win10?

Is your camcorder recognised in the device manager but not Vegas. If so maybe try 'hdvsplit' as your capture program.

Yes, my Camcorder is recognized by Device Manager (under Imaging Devices I see Sony DV Camcorder), and yes, Vegas does not recognize it.

This morning I noticed something else: when I turn the camera on my PC shows "Digital Video Device. Tap to choose what happens with this device". And when I click that I see: "Digital Video Device. Choos1 what do do with this device." with 3 options: 1) Capture and Edit videos Corel Video Studio Pro, 2) Edit and Record Video Adobe Premier Elements, 3) Take no action.

Corel and Adobe happen to be installed on my machine from when I last tried to get this video capture card to work, about a year ago.

I wonder why Vegas is not being offered as a choice.

Could Corel and Adobe be interfering with Vegas?

Should I uninstall Corel and Adobe?

Am I crazy to be on Windows 8? Should I just upgrade to Windows 10? Will that cost me about $100?

Should I try hdvsplit or Scenealyzer? Why would they recognize the card better than Vegas?

Musidvid, my chipset is VIA, not T1.

Yes.

Yes

No. An in-place Windows 8 to 10 upgrade should activate electronically with no out-of-pocket cost to you. If you find that not to be the case or you need something from your current system, just reload your system image that I encouraged you to make.

Not mentioned so far in this conversation is the fact that Windows 10 is the only supported  operating system for Vegas Pro 18. I'm uncertain how that may affect access to firewire adapters.

Here is the update to Roy's problem. When trying to capture video through Vega Pro 18 would not work because he is on Window 8. I had him exit Vegas and go to C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 18.0 and then click on VidCap60.exe. This allows the capture program to run outside of Vegas and this worked. He was able to get everything to work.

Thank you David!!! Yes, I am now seeing my camcorder video in the capture app. This is awesome!

So I assume I will be able to capture (will try very soon).

If that works and the quality is good I will likely just do all my capturing still using Windows 8.1.

But now that I have gotten all this advice I do want to go to Windows 10 ASAP.
