Is it better to handle .MOV or .MP4 files for VP16?

Hi guys,

I shoot with GH5 4K 10bit and for editting use VP16. I wonder to know if it is better to shoot in .mov or .mp4 format? Or is there any difference for VP? I mean which of these two formats VP16 can handle better in terms of editing smoothness? (I often use massive color grading and LUTs).

Thank you in advance for answers

I got my GH5 by the time VP 17 got released.

It's safe to say, however, that MP4 is essentially a friendly version of the MOV format.

Its actually the very same, in addition to the fact that it's universal for both platforms (MAC & PC)

MP4 has been adopted as native to Windows. "Some" MOV formats are harder to crack than a walnut, and may require third-party decoders.

Structurally, the two files from your GH5 should be almost identical.

You think that it does not matter which format? My project will be huge, video files will be around 500-700GB + massive grading so I would like to know in advance how to set my GH5 whether recording to MP4 or MOV in order to ensure as smooth editting as possible.

@miroslav-h

Sorry you missed the subtlety in my post. MP4 is universally supported across platforms, and "may" be less problematic in Windows editors. I can't make a choice for you.
