Lagarith lossless codec crashes often in Vegas 19

John-Janssen wrote on 6/7/2022, 2:06 PM

For intermediate, temporary versions of my videos i have used Lagarith lossless codec with Vegas successfully for many years. However ever since version 19 using Lagarith makes Vegas crash immediately, even before i have the chance of calling up the relevant dialogue. I have to start up Vegas again, sometimes up to 3 times before it will accept a render in this codec. With previous versions of Vegas this was never a problem.

Lagarith is buggy. Not just with some versions of Vegas, but also with Handbrake and ffmpeg, possibly others. It also doesn't always pass muster with routine Windows security scans. I think you will be much happier with this. there is a free version as well as a socket for Vegas. Hint: for really thrifty intermediates, use the 8 bit 4:2:0 option:

Thank you very much for this answer. This is very helpful. I did not know Lagarith was buggy. I will explore MagicYUV.

@John-Janssen
It is a long time ago that I edited DV video, but almost 20 years ago I used this without a problem. Becoming curious by your question I tried to do this with DV stuff made in 2004 and I still had also that codec.
On laptop from signature with Vegas Pro 19 build 636 it was no problem to use it, so it must be something on your installation or your used hardware.
Look to my DV render with Lagarith

Dear j-v. Thank you for taking the time for making a video for this subject. This worked simarly well for me until i upgraded to version 19. Now when i press the "render" button (0:29) Vegas crashes. i don't know why really. I have taken the advise of Musicvid and installed MagicYUV. The first results look promising.

With software including Windows constantly upgrading sometimes causes unwanted side effects. For example whenever i start Vegas all sound on my computer becomes muted (streaming media etc.) and i have to restart it or refresh in order to make the sound come back. I have come to live with it.

Try using different audio drivers in Vegas. Options->Preferences->Audio.

John-Janssen wrote on 6/8/2022, 4:17 AM

Sorry but i do not see an option there to change drivers.

Options->Preferences->Audio Device.

Thank you, i found it. Alas, none of the options (i have 4) seem to make any difference. One even cancels all sound altogether and it won't come back unless you choose another. I think i will have to live with it.
