Mixing 30fps with 25fps

Video_flaneur wrote on 3/1/2019, 6:10 PM

I shoot the majority of my video at 25fps, 50fps and, occasionally, 100fps, then after editing, render at 25fps.

I often intermix short sections of B roll from stock video which is often at 30fps and has no audio.

If I stretch the 30fps sections by the appropriate ratio (thus slowing it down slightly) so that it is processing 'frame by frame' is that likely to give me slightly better output quality for those sections?

That is slowing it down by 15%, which is not slight, but it will work.

Try just plopping it in your 25p project, and Disable Resampling on the 30p events. Doing so will drop every sixth frame, but should look ok. Resample auto is worth trying too.

Something like Twixtor will give best results, of course.

Thank you. I will try each of those and see how they compare. The noticeable slowing won't matter in my case as the B roll is meant to be 'atmospheric'.

I also wondered if it is possible to 'fool' a 30fps file into behaving like 25fpd by altering its metadata.

Would probably do the same as what your doing. Except you can't change the frame rate in Vegas Source Media Properties.

I do agree with keeping the 25p project, honoring the majority of your media.

Since Vegas 14 there is right-click a clip in the Project Media window and choose "Add At Project Frame Rate". It probably does the same thing as you, in one step.

If slowing down the speed is no problem, the best and easiest way to insert 30fps in 25fps project is like bvideo said "add at project framerate". There is than also no need to disable resampling. All frames are smoothly shown, with no hickups and with no ghosting.

Of course you are right, 3Point.

I use Vegas 14 daily, but as if it were Vegas 8, regrettably.

@Musicvid

This handy feature (I use it almost daily) is indeed implemented since Vegas14 and VMS15. I use it often for slow motion (halfspeed 50fps to 25 fps) without worrying about resampling settings. Also for converting 24fps to 25fps or vice versa.

Thank you all for your help. The "add at project framerate" does the job I was after and produces a better quality output.

Good info here!

For me, dividing 29.970 by 23.976 (5/4 is close enough) is still better for my brain.
