Movie Studio 17 - How to remove the black bars top & bottom?

Lee-James wrote on 11/10/2020, 1:16 PM

Hi,

New to the forum and have been using Vegas Movie Studio since 12.0 Platinum and slowly getti g better at creating video content.

I create video content from within both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Lockheed Martin's Prepare3D version 4.5. Some of the content is reviews of products for the Simulation Community and some are Flight Adventure videos.

My rig is an i9-9900k CPU with 32GB RAM, Windows 10 64-bit on a 1TB SSD. My screen resolution is 2560 x 1440 x 32 with an NVidia GeForce 2080Ti 11GB Video card on a 31" on an ACER EB321HQU Monitor. I believe YouTube displays videos in 1920 x 1080 resolution and I capture video for P3D with OBS Studio and for MSFS2020 with NVidia ShadowPlay. I render my video in 1080p HD.

However, I do not know how to remove the inevitable black bars that result when I use EVENT/PAN/CROP to remove the P3D top title banner and also my bottom taskbar buttons (I use Windowed Mode). Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thank you for your help,

regards,

You have to use a smaller dimension in your project and than cut things off the events by Pan/ Crop (sometimes in combination with track motion)

Hi,

Ok, I'm sorry but I do not understand what you mean ...

What must I do? How do I do this?

Thanks,

Lee

Therefore you have to publish here the projectsettings of that project and the MediaInfo of the used OBS file. Look here how to provide that Info: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

1920x1080 is 16:9 display aspect ratio.

Your 2560x1440 monitor display is 14:9 ratio, if fifth grade math serves me correctly..

The two rectangles are different shapes.

Personally I would choose to live with it, although you could crop off the sides and zoom to fill the screen.

An option to avoid those bars when cropping your video is to set in the Pan/crop tool the "Maintain aspect ratio" of Source to "No". Ofcourse this will give a little distortion of the aspect ratio.

Also you can avoid recording the Windows taskbar by hiding it automatically.

Hello,

Yes, for the moment, I have lived with it - I guess I was just looking for a way to just polish the video and improve things.

Thank you,

Hi,

That is what I do already. The Simulator has a top menu which always shows through, so I use Event/Pan/Crop with the Aspect Ratio OFF and just drag the top and bottom sides of the screen downwards and upwards respectively, to remove the menus - and I am left with two black borders!

But thank you for your comments,

Lee

Be aware that in the Pan crop tool there are TWO aspect ratio controls. There is in the side tool bar an icon where you can switch ON/OFF the aspect ratio of the pan/crop selection window and there is a Maintain aspect Ratio in the Source tab where you can change maintaining the aspect ratio of the source to YES/NO.

To avoid the black bars or zooming into the video but instead stretching the video when cropping, aspect ratio of selection window must be set to OFF and aspect ratio of Source must be set to NO.

Thank you for that. I'll give it a go - just recorede another flight in OBS Studio so we'll see how the edit goes later.

Really appreciate everyone's help!

Set your display resolution to 16:9 aspect.
