mpg import problem from Sony handycam

I imported some video from my Sony Handycam DCR-SR200, intending to edit on Vegas 14.  However, the software will not open it.  An error message says that it's an unsupported file type.  The detailed explanation is:  "The file contains an unsupported number of channels."  How can I get my Sony software to play nice with my Sony camcorder mpg's?

"How" (by what means) have you imported the video?
