Music in how to videos

DMT3 wrote on 10/9/2022, 5:22 PM

I am still working on my first detailed how to video and I wanted some input on your ideas about music. It seems since the popularity of Star Wars in the 70s that every moment of a video must be filled with music. I miss the days where nat sounds or silence moved the story. On networks like Hallmark, the music is just there, adds nothing to the experience. Other movies like LOTR have used themes very well, but I still get tired of the constant sound.
Now to the point of my question, how necessary is music to a How To video? As you well know, licensing is a pain. I have used a lot of copyrighted music under my short personal videos and so far only had one silenced by youtube. But frankly, it is hard to find 20 minutes of music to fill a How To video, so would you watch it with only the nats and VO? thanks for your input.

@DMT3 What are the How to videos going to be of?

DMT3 wrote on 10/9/2022, 8:59 PM

I only have one and it is a woodworking project. Making an Outdoor Garden Lantern (Low Voltage Light)

Music intro, scene transitions, and final credits. Only, I would say.

@DMT3 My videos have no music, from the comments I receive they appreciate there's no annoying music & If it's an instructional video you need to hear the sound of machines working & any commentary, Imagine music being played during a class, + music is a personal taste,

My videos have no intro, nobody wants to sit through 30secs of flashing pics n loud music, they know what they've clicked n just want to see the content so skip through that bit anyway, if you do put an intro on keep it short.

I guess it might depend on if it's more for entertainment or educational purposed, I've stopped watching videos simply because the music got on my nerves 🤷‍♂️

I'm with the "less is more" approach.

A common usage of music in many YouTube videos is to have a short piece of music or sound effect over the intro and end of the video; in other words, bookending the video. Have a look at using bumpers and stingers in this short Storyblocks tutorial: https://blog.storyblocks.com/tutorials/what-are-bumpers-and-stingers/

Background music throughout a how-to program just seems so old-fashioned these days - like something out of the 1950s/60s.

@DMT3 Thanks, I'll have a look but I've already promised my subscribers that my videos won't change, I agree, less is more.

I've been on a job that is messed up with timings, I've only been able to get part of one room fitted before I've had to do work on other parts of the house. as you know it takes time to make these vids, you have to sit down & get in the frame of mind to feel the flow of the vid & know how it will progress to the end, not easy when you only have part of a project done, so I've hardly put any videos up in the last few mths.

For me when I am editing & uploading it's like having a second job, + there's answering all the comments. but I've got 389 vids on YT, just short of 26k subs & still get 150-ish new subs a mth even though I haven't been uploading, I'll stick with the format I use, it works for me & I earn enough to pay my mortgage 👍

90% of these 911 files are video clips I have to organise & edit 🤦‍♂️😂

PS, just looked at my YT About tab on my channel -

Thank you all for the input. My feeling was to go with minimal, if any music, but I wasn't sure. @Former user , I did not suggest you should change your videos so I don't understand your response to me.
I will link the video when it is posted. thanks again.

@DMT3 I was just saying why bumpers and stingers are no interest to me, but i got mixed up with whose comment that was & putting @DMT3 wasn't correct, sorry, everybody's bloody avatar is red 🤬, still I think the info is relevant. Make video that you would watch & do what you think is right,

DMT3 wrote on 10/10/2022, 10:51 AM

@Former user Yeah, I need to change my avatar. Yes, your input is relevent and again, I appreciate it. This is only my second attempt at creating a how to video so I am wanting to make something that people will watch if they have an interest in the subject. Plus it is good mental exercise for me in organizing my future wood projects.

Former user wrote on 10/10/2022, 11:26 AM

@DMT3 👍 When I say I watch it to see how the video flows, the one thing I try watch out for is long pauses before the next clip, I put a 12 frame crossfade between each clip to help the transition but the difference between a 1sec pause & 2sec pause in action on screen before the next clip can make quite a difference.

Some YT tutorials go too quick but some go too slow, finding the balance isn't easy 🤷‍♂️🙃

+1

What you want to say and show is the important thing - not the music - that only distracts (at least me) in such videos.

I have published the video. If you are interested in woodworking, I appreciate you watching it. Please give me feedback/critiques so I can improve if I do more in the future.

I like the video itself - maybe you could shorten some workflows and explanations a bit.
Example:
- At the beginning, where you explain how you came to your decision to do it that way and not differently.
- The explanation of the personal protective equipment - you surely don't want to repeat it in every video - maybe a short hint and a few symbols should be enough (although I am a safety engineer).

From the technical side, I would have done without the metal angles and instead used (invisible) wooden dowels and glued them in with waterproof wood glue.

And last but not least: I like your workshop very much - I would like to work there.

DMT3 wrote on 10/18/2022, 7:59 AM

@walter-i. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comments. Originally the video was a LOT longer. I tried to cut out as much as I could and still make some points about my approach. My intro was a bit long looking back at it, Maybe I didn't need to discuss the other options. As far as the safety, again I wanted to shorten it but... you may or may not have noticed my left hand was a bit awkward. About 6 months ago, I almost destroyed it on the table saw. I am getting surgery soon to try to regain use in my middle and ring finger. So I felt I wanted to be adamant about shop safety in my first video. If I do more videos I will be much briefer. But since you mentioned it, I might do a re-edit at some point to make it shorter.
I considered dowels, but it would have required some design changes that I kind of got stuck in my head. If I make anymore I will either do an L-bracket on the side, or recess the sides a bit to allow room for a dowel inside of the dado edges.

Thanks again.

@DMT3

I've gone both ways...

with

and without music.

I usually find music distracting if the information requires concentration on technical details.

I had a friend who liked to have music in the background of everything he did. He brought a large sound system to a computer room where we were replacing head-disk assemblies on mainframe disks when HDAs were the size of car tires. With the noise in the computer room, he lost.

I considered dowels, but it would have required some design changes that I kind of got stuck in my head.

Just FYI:
I just happened to see a good tip on how to drill (it would be much easier with a lathe - but I didn't see one in your workshop) a straight dowel hole in the face of a square timber: See from 10:45

The video is in German, but you don't really need the text - otherwise you have Youtube to translate it.
