ON DEADLINE! Can't solve weird audio problem in Vegas Pro 15

i am erikd wrote on 3/9/2018, 3:09 PM

I have included a mediainfo screenshot to show my file format etc.

I have lots of mxf 4k AVC Intra 10bit 422 files that HAVE audio on both channel 1 and channel 2. I can verify that they have audio in Catalyst Browse, Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve, VLC and Switch. However, when I bring the files into Vegas Pro 15 build 311 all of my audio channels (all 8) are completely empty. I mean flat line nothing.

I did the internal preferences "turn of compound" whatever but that didn't help.

Has someone dealt with a problem like this before?

If all you need is the stereo audio from channels 1 and 2, VLC can rip audio from the video files it plays. I don't remember exactly how, google can help you there. Also, if that fails and you really get up against the wall with the deadline, if you are using windows 10, you can open audacity, set the input source to windows wasapi from the drop down menu on the left, set your desired sample rate and all that, then hit record. Then all you have to do is play the mxf file in any program that can play it with audio, and audacity will record that audio into a new file (make sure your windows volume is at 100% when recording). Export that as a wav file (at the source file's sample and bit rate) and Vegas will be able to open it.

Those solutions should get the job done, and allow us some time to figure out what the cause is.

Thanks Frosty. I was able to export VLC .wav audio BUT it combines the two channels into dual mono. It doesn't keep them stereo or separate microphones in this case. Couldn't see a setting to change this in VLC.

The problem with the audacity option is that your playback must be perfect to use that as an option. Occasionally my large 4k files will sputter and that doesn't work.

I am pretty sure this is a bug in Vegas 15 now because even Sony Catalyst Browse plays the audio just fine.

I will see if there is an export audio option there. If nothing else I will just export the audio clips in Media Encoder.

What a mess.

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried to use Catalyst Browse to convert the files to XAVC-I? I know that the Catalayst files play well in Vegas. Where are your source files from?

If you can, please share a sample file on a cloud service such as on Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, mega.nz, wetransfer.com or mediafire.com, so that others can try solutions, and we can let the developers know.

So this is just a couple seconds example. The shortest clip I had was an accidental quick on/off record but you can still see there is two channels of audio.

Thanks. What camera?

Sony FS7

Thanks. Please leave the sample online so I can link the developers to it.

Besides VLC, there is probably an FFMPEG command line that would extract the audio as WAV files, but I'm not sure what it is. It plays with audio in Catalyst Browse, so I agree that is worth a try, but I've no time to experiment with exports right now.

Thanks Nick. So, I ran all of the clips through Media Encoder to strip out aiff files. Thankfully Vegas still recognizes those.

If you have Media Encoder probably you have the whole Adobe suite. If yes, you can easily copy the 2-channel content into a new stereo file with Audition. Then import the audio file into Vegas and voilà, quick and easy (for now, until Magix will do something for you).
