Optimal Gameplay Recording Settings

BirdDog wrote on 1/10/2023, 11:24 PM

I'm using OBS to record gameplay for Madden 22. Recording the game is fine. What I'm having an issues with how large the footage file is, which results in issues with editing.

A 1 hour 45 minutes video is 15.2 GBs. My settings are:

Recording Quality: High Quality, Medium File Size

Recording Format: mp4

Encoder: Hardware(AMD, H.264)

This large file size results in very stuttery playback within Vegas's video preview and Trimmer. I do remember something about the video not being in optimal editing format, but I don't know how to fix that. What do I do for smoother editing?

Thanks for your help!

Can you share the rest of the settings? What's the resolution and framerate? What's keyframe interval set to (try 1 instead of 0)?

What's your CPU and GPU?

Since the Output Mode is set at "Simple," I don't know what the specs are. However, here's what I know:

Base and Output Resolution: 1920x1080

Framerate: 60 FPS

What I can do is use Advanced Output Mode, set recording encoder to streaming, and follow whatever recommendations you can give.

I see, I have only seen advanced.

1080p 60 shouldn't be too challenging to playback so perhaps it's other settings that can be improved.

One suggestion - Your file size relates to a video bitrate around 20Mbs which is pretty normal for good quality 1080. If your MP4 file is AVC video you could probably drop that to 15Mbs without quality loss but it would depend on what action is in your gameplay. It would reduce the file size by 25%.

  1. Size, Quality, Speed. Pick two.
  2. AMD .h264 may be twice as large, and lower quantity, but still faster than x264 software encoder. It is also slower to decode and handle on the Vegas timeline.
  3. By contrast, x264 software encoding can be half the size and retain better quality, but be slower to record adequate frame rate in OBS. It will, however, handle better on the Vegas timeline.
  4. TANSTAAFL. Your task is to achieve the best balance of Size, Quality, and Speed to serve your needs. It may not be achieved by using Simple recording mode in OBS>
