Partition Hard Drive ?

FoskeyMedia wrote on 5/22/2017, 6:36 PM

New Hard Drive. Previously I partitioned and had OS and programs on one partition and data files and footage on another. I've had some issues though, im particular with Plural Eyes having data on a sepearte drive/partition.

Do you suggest I just keep everything on one drive/one partition?

I also have an external drive I use for storage. Once a project is closed I move everything there. So the internal drive is only for active projects.

"Do you suggest I just keep everything on one drive/one partition?"

I would never do that. The reason is that I save the image of the boot / applications partition and don't want to incur the time and space penalty to have data backed up and restored every time I have to deal with a system issue or maintenance.

When I set up new vendor-built systems for others that only have one disk, I shrink the primary partition and create a new DATA partition. It doesn't help performance, but allows me to replace the system image while keeping data in place. In those cases I usually move the Desktop and Documents folders to the DATA partition since so many applications slavishly point to the Documents folder.

My last laptop had two drive bays so I had an SSD and a 7200 RPM drive.

I don't partition anymore, drives are cheap enough I have three in my system. One for os/software, others for data.

Out side of the back up issue John mentioned, is there any performance value to partitioning ?
as I mentioned, Plaurel Eyes wants the data files on the same drive as the OS and program, so I'm thinking...just one partition for the rive.

There is no perfomance benefit to partitioning.

I run Plural eyes with separate DATA and OS Drives. What is it doing that requires they be on the same drive?

Partitioning is a mistake because the wall is not very portable; everything must be copied and indexed anew.
