Persistent lockups of Vegas Pro while shuffling clips

AlanH wrote on 10/20/2022, 7:18 AM

I have been using Vegas Pro since version 17, and am on Vegas Pro 20 update 1 as of today.

I have steadily upgraded my computer(s) over the years, and currently use a Ryzen 9 5900X with 32GB RAM and AMD 5100 8GB graphics card under Win 11. Not bleeding-edge, but surely powerful enough for 1080p projects with minimal effects.

Ever since using Vegas Pro, the app has frequently (every few minutes) locked up solidly when I start shuffling clips about quickly during the editing phase of a project - just the time when I need to be 'in the flow'. I have resorted to using auto backups every minute to keep my projects going, and hit Ctrl-S every few keystrokes, but this is far from ideal, as you might imagine (understatement...), and is embarrassing when working in front of clients.

Each time I install a new paid upgrade, I hope that this problem will go away, but it never does.

The fact that it has seems independent of PC hardware, app version and operating system leaves me at a loss.

Nobody else seems to report this situation in the forum, and I have tried everything I can think of.

Please can anyone suggest what I might do to overcome this?

Cheers

What type of video are you using? (not the file extension, the actual type of video in the file)

Can you provide steps to reproduce the issue? Or possibly a video showing the issue?

Thanks for getting back.

My cameras are: Sony RX100-VII, Sony ZV-1 (2-off), Panasonic FZ2000, and Canon G30. All MP4; Canon FHD (1080p25) and others 4K (2160p25).

Detailed MediaInfo reports from sample files (long) at end of this post.

This has been a problem when using all Canon camcorders at FHD.

I have always created proxies for all files with resolutions 1080p and above.

Also happened when I had 1080 and 1440 monitors as well as my current 4K monitor.

I will look into making a video using OBS screen capture shortly.

Cheers,

Alan

I still have not managed to capture a video of the lockup.

However, I have found that setting clip thumbnails from ALL to NONE reduces the occurrence of lockups significantly - doesn't completely cure it, but it's certainly more stable. Could this be a clue as to the problem?

I have tried altering Dynamic RAM Preview size but it doesn't seem to make any real difference: I stick with the default of 1634MB. GPU acceleration is Optimal for Radeon Pro WX5100 (8GB)

Take the time to render proxies from the 4k files. That should help right away.

AlanH wrote on 12/8/2022, 10:36 AM

Thanks, Musicvid.

I always create proxies before starting to edit any 4K project (yes, it does take time!), and had previously used them for FHD material as well, especially with multiple cameras. Working without proxies in 4K is a non-starter.

Sadly, IMO, Vegas Pro's help system does not go into enough practical detail about proxy working (and many other editing preferences). Giving us an understanding of the design rationale behind the various preference settings, and the consequent tradeoffs with different processor speeds, GPU/Main RAM sizes, HDD speeds etc., would be very valuable and make for less trial-and-error in optimising our installations.

This problem has existed for a long time; at least 3 Vegas Pro revisions ago, well before I started using 4K material.

Since I set clip thumbnails to 'none', I have only had 2 lockups, when I would previously have had between 10 and 20. I'm sure this is significant.

I use only "head tail" thumbnails. When I had all of them, there were problems with performance. Also, I am assuming you have the latest graphics drivers?

With my computer spec'ed in my signature, VP20 has been really really good. I edit with UHD 4K Panasonic 422 10bit all the time and no problems doing what I want with the clips.

@AlanH

For more information about any errors you're getting, you can look at Windows Reliability History.

Hi ,

I also use a FZ2000 and a Panasonic HCX1
Both set to 4K and 50 fps.

I have an older laptop with 32 gb of ram

I am using the proxy fies that are automatically generated by Vegas
I have the gpu on none in the settings and like Reyfox the head and tail settings

Alsothe GB in use to the max 75% I believe
I have to say that with Vegas 19 I was getting regular crashes for no particular reason.like you said every minute pressed control S to be sure
I do a lot of edit work with green screen , mocha , and keying, and hitfilm compositing
I recently formatted my system , did a clean install of everything and installed Vegas 20
And after 3 weeks I had 1 crash , and that was after a stabilization with prodad mercalli 5 .Mercalli refused to return to Vegas. (To let you know, I am editing every day for like 3 hours)

Maybe it is the compete format that puts everything back in place , maybe it is V20 , I leave that in the middle

@john_dennis Thanks for the steer - sorry for the slow response. I had not been aware of that Windows facility. Unfortunately, the results just show that Vegas Pro 'stopped working' with no further details. Is there anything I can do to increase the depth of detail?

@john_dennis D'oh - sorry, missed that! Looks like an error in the AMD WX5100 driver. I have pulled down the latest driver set from the AMD website and done a factory reset install. Fingers crossed...
