photo shoot click remove

marcinzm wrote on 10/1/2022, 5:19 AM

Hello,

Is it possible to remove camera photo shoot click sound?

I mean photo multiclicking sound and also single photo click sound.

If yes, how can I do that?

I have RX-De-Click tool, but I don`t know if this effect is responsible for it, because when I used it, photo shoot sound still exists.

Please help me

Regards

Marcin

If you've got RX plug-ins like De-Click as part of RX Standard or Advanced (but not Elements), you could try using RX's spectral editor to eliminate the clicks. On the spectrogram, the click will appear like a blip its width being the time that the click takes and its height being the frequency range that it covers. In a spectral editor like RX (or Steinberg's SpectraLayers Pro - which is much less expensive), it's done by copying a similarly sized part of the audio spectrum and pasting it over the click thus eliminating the click.

I've been using SpectraLayers Pro for years to get rid of all sorts of unwanted location sounds including low level wind noise. But spectral editors are not plugins, they are standalones, but can be selected in Vegas Pro as your preferred audio editor so there is quick access from VP's timeline to the selected audio editor.

Re RX De-Click ... I imagine that you've tried various options in that plug-in especially using the random click option as well expanding the width of the click control.

Yes. Absolutely. It doesn't matter if your RX8 is the Standard or Advanced version, There's lots of tutorials on YouTube about using RX spectral repair: e.g. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=iZotope+rx+audio+repair . Other search criteria will get other results. Please keep in mind that I haven't watched them - but they are a resource.

Short duration single clicks here and there can usually be quickly removed with Sound Forge AS or Pro. Copy a few milliseconds of the adjacent waveform, highlight the click and select the "Overwrite" command in the "Edit> Paste Special" menu (or right-click for the context menu). Alternately, clicks can be manually drawn out with the 'Pencil' tool, but it is tedious for an unskilled newbie. SF Pro has a 'Replace' and "Interpolate" which essentially does the same thing but is faster. A noise reduction 'Click and Crackle removal' tool can sometimes work as well if the click is very slight.
If none of the above work satisfactorily, Steinberg's SpectraLayers Pro or iZ's RX Advanced to the rescue.. neither is a low-cost app or plug-in though.

Learned something again! Thank you!
Overwrite and Replace are now my favorites.
The "Pencil" tool I have not yet grasped - that is grayed out - I still have to play a little with it.

The "Pencil" tool I have ... is grayed out.

Sound Forge 'zoom ratio' must be at least 1:32 to enable the 'Pencil' tool.

As MV stated, if you post a sample, we can recommend a tool or procedure.

fr0sty wrote on 10/1/2022, 7:07 PM

I'd probably just grab some white noise (ambient sound from the room) from nearby on the waveform where there was no click, cut a section of it out, cut out the click, and paste the white noise over it, with a fade in and out on each side. as long as the noise sample is long enough, and the fades are smooth, nobody would notice... but doing it manually like that can get tedious. However, you can do this within VEGAS without additional software.

Now it works - you are more concrete than the help text in Soundforge, which describes it somewhat cryptically.

I got a similar problem (but of another magnitude!) on my bucket list to fix:

A few years back I was on an icebreaker nature trip filming polar bears on the pack ice from the deck of the ship. Unfortunately, out of the 100 passengers, a lot were taking pictures non-stop ruining my sound when a polar bear on the pack ice came close to investigate the ship. I would like to extract the footsteps of the polar bear from the clicking sound (and the hum of ship's engine). Any help or suggestions welcome.

@bitman  ... thank you for the audio sample.

Using SpectraLayers Pro 9, the spectrogram of the first 20 seconds of that audio is:

The camera clicks are all the highlights above around 600 Hz. But there's plenty of clean space without the clicks to copy/paste over the camera clicks (only copy/pasting frequencies above 700 Hz so not touching the drumming of the ship's engines) - which results in this:

And the resulting audio:

It looks tedious work, clone stamping every click! I wish there was some AI to do the job, it could be useful tool to remove those pesky camera clicks. Sorry boys for not replying on the post by me. I have been very very busy lately. I had 3 weddings to film and edit during 8 days.

I share with you my two wav files on dropbox.

Could you be so kind and give me detailed tutorial how to remove photo shot clicks in Spectral Layer. I have this software which was attached to one on the previous versions of Vegas Pro and I use them to remve musics from background and to grab it only narration (human voices).

@Dexcon could you be so kind and record a video tutorial how to remove photo shot clics in Spectral Layer ?

Here are the dropbox files (I hope you are able to download them, if not, please write to me). I don't use dropbox portal so often.

@marcinzm  ... Due to forum maintenance, uploads aren't working at the moment. However, I found a YouTube tutorial about using SpectraLayer's Clone Stamp, the tool that I use in SLP for removing clicks and the like:

Usually, I use the square brush rather than the round brush as shown in the YT video - but that's personal preference only. Unlike the mass clicking that you've got in your audio example, the clciks (from cameras or other) are generally intermittent so the clone stamp's width setting might only be .02 to .05 seconds. But there are so many other times when bigger settings like used in the YT video can be used to get rid of annoying background sounds including industrial clangs from nearby work sites/road works/etc.

In your audio example, almost all of the clicks are in the frequency range from 400 Hz and above, so there's little need to clone (i.e. copy/paste) anything under 400 Hz. It's fortunate that there aren't other sounds (people talking etc) in the background because that would make the task much more difficult. All I did the other day was to clone a small section of clicks to make a wider section of click-free audio; then clone that wider section over another click-affected section; and so on. One thing to be alert to with some audio, particularly with lower frequencies, is that multiple clone stamping along the timeline can an undesirable drumming sound where one small 'bump' sound gets repeated time and time again. In that instamce, it's often better to delete the affending frquency band causing the drumming sound and replace that frequency band with the Noise Spray tool set at a volume similar to the volume of the audio that was deleted.
