Please Help: Rendering Nightmare

KeyplayerG wrote on 2/2/2019, 5:24 PM

Hi Guys,

I am having the worst time with Vegas Pro 16 (build 361) NOT rendering and causing total systemic crashes on my Win 10 Pro 64 bit PC. We couldn't be talking a more basic file here.

I'm using a Sony HDD Camcorder to shoot 1 hour (in 5 segments: Warm-up & 4 10 minute quarters) Little League Basketball Games. I bring the Camcorder back to my studio and import the .mfx files directly into the archive folder on my ADK Custom Built for Media PC. The final destination is simple DVD format. The videos are only for game reviews for the team. So there's NOTHING FANCY on this. I load the files into Vegas Pro. I mark the clips up 1st Quarter, 2nd Quarter, etc. through the end of the game. That's it for Text. The clips have a slight fade in and fade out. NO FX, NO PLUGS, NOTHING! All of this goes through smoothly. Then I try to render each Quarter separately and the nightmare starts.

It'll go 13% and crash. Next time 54% and crash. Next time 78% and crash and so on. These crashes are total! Render Function freezes. Then Vegas Crashes. Then the PC crashes. Then I have to force a shutdown, Re-boot, go through the Bios to get it to bring up the desk top, then do a Re-start to make sure that the PC is back to normal function and then try again. Last Saturday, It took me the usual 60 - 90 minutes to set the project up for rendering and I was trying to get the 4 quarters rendered from 5pm till 1:15am!!!! Today, it's looking slightly better. I've got half of the game rendered. But it's taken 5 tries to get the 2nd Quarter in the "done column!"

I use this PC 12 hours a day doing music production on Nuendo for all kinds of media and never have a problem like this. But every Saturday, I have to go through this insanity with Vegas Pro. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to make this program just render the clips without hiccups the first time?? How to make Vegas Pro act reliably enough to use for a business?

I'll bet dollars to donuts you have a hardware heating issue. If it were a project issue Vegas would freeze at the same place. You can do hours of audio, but not video, that's kind of a giveaway.

But humor us anyway -- post your file properties.

What is the location of the sourcefile on your hardware,
what is exactly the render location and its render template,
what is the total amount of free space on your renderlocation,

in short you gave too little information to know or understand what you are actual doing.

Both are on the same 1Tb drive. Should they be on different drives?

what is the total amount of free space on your renderlocation,

There's 405Gb of free space on the drive.

I'm a media composer, not a video editor. So, I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to do here. Do I have to download the file in your link? The 2nd link looks like Q&A for the 1st link, So, I'm really not sure which steps I'm supposed to be following. You're talking to a total video novice here.

Before doing anything, clean the dust bunnies from your fins and fans.

1. Download MediaInfo. Don't install any toolbars. Run it from context menu and post full file properties.

2. Vegas file properties are where it says they are. Post those, we need both.

3. Troubleshooting steps are a guide. Usually, problems are solved by users taking steps they don't think apply to them.

4. Be proactive and people here will want to help.

Would be much better if one drive only has to read and the other one only has to write. Also much less memory use in that case.

Hi @KeyplayerG maybe before spending $ on ssd etc you could try a ramdrive, if you load and run your project or a smaller subset from the ramdrive and it doesn’t solve your problems then it hasn’t cost you anything and the issue is elsewhere. Asus motherboards come with, if you don’t have there are some free ones ... https://www.ghacks.net/2017/04/03/the-best-free-ramdisk-programs-for-windows/

I cannot vouch for these as haven’t used.

bvideo wrote on 2/3/2019, 11:09 AM

I agree with Musicvid that it is likely a hardware issue, maybe temp or maybe ram. I am sure Roseberry & company at ADK would be glad to help with it.

No, In Windows, "Context Menu" means to "Right Click."

Eagle Six wrote on 2/4/2019, 6:12 PM

@KeyplayerG In Mediainfo select the 'View' tab, scroll down and select 'Text' mode, then post a screenshot of your source media (you will see there is additional information in the Text mode.

Post a screenshot of your source media from within Vegas. Right click on the event/clip on the timeline track, scroll down to the bottom and select 'Properties'. A screenshot of this pop-up window display may be helpful. Unfortunately I have never been able to enlarge this window to show all the data, so you may have to get a screen grab, then scroll to the right and get another one, then scroll to the bottom and get another one, so on so forth until we can see all the information (probably will require about 4 screenshots!).

Have you tried a full reset of Vegas Pro? Hold down the 'Ctrl+Shift' keys while you double left click on the Vegas Pro desltop icon (shortcut), then check 'Delete all cached application data', then left click on 'Yes'. This will reset Vegas Pro back to the original installed default settings and delete the pesky cached application data that sometimes will build up and cause Vegas to do strange things.

Have you updated your GPU drivers lately? Are they current?

I don't think you have provided a screenshot of the Render Format and template settings, could you please do that as well?

SSD or mechanical hard drive ?

don't overclock . in fact , I under-clock . things run cooler , and performance is just as good . Potentially much more reliable too .

I've had similar render freezes. Without knowing much more about your setup and issue, I would recommend trying these things:

1. Are you using GPU rendering (vce, nvenc, quick sync)? If so, try the render without it.

2. Are you using GPU acceleration on the timeline? Try to go into preferences and disable it if so.

Many times I've found that render crashes can be caused by issues with the GPU, and those are 2 tests that can isolate that if it is the cause. If doing either works, try to update your GPU drivers.

Info that can help us isolate the problem quickly for you:

what type of GPU you are using, windows version, GPU driver version number, project properties settings, render settings (what codec you are rendering to, which template or which settings if using a custom template) mediainfo properties as described above, and make sure you go through the steps in the guide that musicvid posted.

That one is for DVD or Blueray in the same format as your sourcefiles.

We have a WINNER! The combination of Mpeg 2 + a different drive to print on worked great. Not a single hiccup! I could even cancel a rendering (which would have crashed the entire PC instantly before) to make a leabeling correction and it went smooth as glass. THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH! 😁😉
