I'm currently thinking of update, I have studio 14 and obviously much cheaper to stay in studio; can any pro users speak to why it's worth the extra investment to go to pro? May seem obvious but would be helpful - thanks.
This is really a pretty easy question to answer. Profit vs. non-profit. Most of your (potential) clients will not be satisfied with Studio's limitations. Studio's overall flexibility just isn't enough to accomodate most needs in that setting. For simple YouTube or home video projects, however, Studio is perfect -- unless, like me, you're an OCD editor 😉
I'm guessing Sony carefully crafted the Vegas line split that way when the company owned Vegas.
I've owned Pro since it was called Vegas Video 2 and I've owned Movie Studio since it was called Video Factory. 90% of my live event productions could have been been done just as easily in Movie Studio Platinum. If you need scripting, buy Pro.
Compared to VMS 16 that I sometimes use, has Pro 2 options that I use for bigger projects: scripting and the use of nested vegs for things that have more than 4 tracks. All is also to do with VMS Platinum but will take a little more time.

I started with Vegas Video 3.0 and wasn't aware of a studio version until about version 8-ish or so, give-or-take a few. I don't even remember a product called Video Factory!
I have never used the "Movie Studio" version, though I am a Vegas user since Sonic Foundry offered Vegas-1 (audio only') to registered Sound Forge users. MS has limited audio options (like most NLEs). Vegas Pro OTOH, has a substantial 'unlimited' track count DAW including various plug-ins. Though it still lacks adequate MIDI and side-chaining.
