Problem creating a image sequence in Vegas Pro 17 latest build

bryan-quarrie wrote on 2/3/2020, 7:20 AM

Hi,

In the past I have created time-lapse videos out of imported jpegs using the import media> click on image sequence start/end boxes, then open the images.

In the latest build, after you've imported the images and placed the media on the timeline, it only shows the first few and last few images of the sequence when you play it. It didn't do this in previous builds.

What is wrong here?

Thanks :)

Is there any naming difference in your files?

Vegas is always picky about this. There must be no characters following the last sequence digit and the "period" before the file extension, for instance.

Are you sure there really is content in every individual frame? Are your JPEGs/TIFFs/PNGs/etc ok?

Hi j-v and Musicvid,

I don’t name the files as I import them directly onto the computer with their names intact.

I use a Yi 4k+ camera which names its pictures as YIxxxxxxx (the x’s represent the take number in the file names).

I did a timelapse lasting 6 hours, with the first take beginning with YI001500 and YI013545. As usual I set the start and end pics when importing as a sequence, and they appear to get imported but when you play the sequence back there is a large black sequence that appears between the first few frames and the last few frames 🙁.

I’ve updated the gfx card drivers (radeon rx580), and enabled and disabled gfx acceleration but no luck...

So to be clear, the imported sequence is the correct length and correct number of frames, but there are no images in the body of the sequence?

Yes Adis - All the pictures are legit. (took a long time to go through them, but yeah 😅😅)

Hmmm...and clip frame rate matches project's?

Musicvid wrote on 2/3/2020, 9:12 AM

Can you upload a zipped folder somewhere including an intact portion of the original sequence that includes some images that work and some that don't?

Drive or Dropbox are strongly preferred.

ok I’ll try later on tonight (GMT - It is late afternoon in the UK at the moment)

Good point - I’ll try this as well. ☝️

All the pictures are legit.

Legit is not a valid extension.
So what exactly extensions does the YI001500 file have.

Sorry about the misunderstanding. They are all jpegs.

I do HDR timelapses all the time in Vegas, I can confirm the latest build does work on with lapses, at least when importing .psd images as a sequence. I have not tried JPEGs as they are not high enough quality to do what I need with my lapses.

I doubt it's anything to do with your GPU, once you get those images uploaded we should be able to help more.

Thanks fr0sty. Just out of interest, what kind of storage do you dump your pictures when making a timelapse?

I use a seagate USB3.0 1GB external drive.

My PC specs are as follows:

CPU: Rizen 7 dual 8-core processor

32 GB RAM

Windows 10 Pro

fr0sty wrote on 2/3/2020, 12:01 PM

My workflow:

Pics are shot as 12 bit RAWs using AdobeRGB color space to SD cards using Panasonic S1 cameras, from there dumped to a USB 3.0 8TB drive for storage until editing, then the RAWs are converted to PSD, using Lightroom (so Vegas can open them) and processed using LRTimelapse if I need setting ramping/flicker removal (only reason I still have Adobe software), then colored into HDR using Vegas 17 in HDR mode connected to a HDR OLED TV. From there, Vegas renders out to HDR 4K HEVC files.

OK - so I haven't had time to upload the pictures used in my timelapse experiment, but i DO have this screengrab movie showing what exactly I'm trying to accomplish.

Tell me what you think.

The dimensions of each picture is 4000 x 3000

PS - I used Wondershare to capture this as the screen capture function on Vegas Pro doesn't work on my machine, so you unfortunately you won't be able to see the mouse cursor :(.

Everything else can be seen though.

Thanks

Your numbering is not correct. It jumps from 10025 to 20026. They have to be sequential, not just a bigger number. You are missing frames. The end number is the last recognized number of that sequence. You will need to import it as multiple sequences.

Ok, I’m going to try another timelapse tonight (this time on a different camera - Sony RX0ii. I’ll keep you all posted.

The first sign that something was amiss was when Vegas indicated the last image was 10025. Have you tried renaming the sequence in Windows?

Move everything that's not a picture file out of the folder.

Strike Control + A to select every picture in the folder.

Right-Click to get the context menu and select "Rename'

Enter the name of your favorite pet.

Strike Enter and Windows will do the rest.

All files in that folder (except for the project file at the beginning) are timelapse pictures copied straight from the camera. Nothing else was in the folder.

BTW, that picture number 10025 was the first picture on the camera.

(Also, the original figures I mentioned at the start of this thread - YI001500 and YI013545 - was for example only, but every picture the Yi camera produces follow the same naming convention).

I like the tip about naming after my favourite pet though lol!! 😂

john_dennis wrote on 2/3/2020, 6:57 PM

My camera actually allows one to set the starting name of the pictures. It might be considered a vanity thing, but I use it to differentiate my photos from my wife's.

Lately, I've been bulk renaming camera video files with the date as the first ten characters in the file name. I do this in case the files get moved around after I'm dead and one of my great grandchildren wonders when that video was shot. I add further subject information to the file names within Vegas.

fr0sty wrote on 2/3/2020, 11:35 PM

On the timelapse you posted the video of, click import sequence, and note which image it auto-fills into the last frame in the sequence. Keep that in mind. Import that sequence. Now to back to the import menu, and starting from the next image AFTER the previous sequence ended, import another sequence. Do this until you reach the last image.

Then put the multiple sequences you imported side by side on the timeline.

For some reason, your camera is skipping frames in its numbering scheme. That is why Vegas has a big hole in your timelapse, it thinks there should be frames in that blank space where your camera jumped from one number to another, leaving black frames in between the gap.
