Problem rendering movie

Hello all,

I am at novice at video editing, just picked up Movie Studio 15 Platinum two days ago. I made an intro for a single take, unedited Youtube video which plays just fine with Windows Media Player, and works on my Blu Ray player. Then I decided to chop up an older martial arts training video, took it from 55 minutes to 5 minutes. I exported the video, put it on a flash drive and plugged it into my blu ray player and it won't play. I tried to watch it on my computer and it only has audio, no video. I uploaded the MP4 file to Youtube, downloaded it from Youtube, and suddenly it plays fine on my PC and on the Blue Ray player. Surely I'm making a novice mistake while exporting?

Did you use Vegas to "chop up" your video?

Your source is variable frame rate; did you try re-encode in Handbrake first?

The better way is to do your chopping in VideoRedo, avoiding a whole render generation .

Yes, I used Movie Studio to cut it up.

No, I did not use Handbrake. The original video file is over 20 years old, though I'm not sure who's touched it since.

I'm not looking to buy another program. I plan to use this to edit and combine clips from a GoPro. This was more of just a side job. Vegas works fine for chopping up videos, but I just have to upload them to Youtube and then download them to get them to work 🙃

The input is from the original file and the output is from one that hasn't been uploaded to Youtube.

That's what we needed. Your video is variable frame rate, which may benefit from encoding in Handbrake or muxing in ffmpeg.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. When importing, I use "match media settings", and when exporting I use "Save it to my hard drive" and select MP4

Ok as you didn't go into "Advanced Options" you won't know which template was used.

Your source file is 480, your exported file is 4K(!), and your YouTube download is 720. Is there a reason why you are exporting SD 720x480 as 3840x2160? Is there other material on your timeline which is 4K size?

I've just realised why your exported file probably doesn't play on your Blu-ray file. It's a 4K file and your player most likely cannot handle 4K. Can it? Likewise on your pc which player are you using and can it handle 4K?

Your file should play better letting the teevee/player do the upscaling rather than software upscaling. Unnecessary 90% of the time.

Oddly enough, I never noticed that. No, there's nothing 4k in this video, and no reason I should have been exporting in such a large resolution.

 

EDIT: Okay, I re-exported the video in something more manageable, and it works now. It obviously took way less time to render, too. I'm glad to find this out early on because I shoot GoPro footage at 1080p 60fps, and don't want to waste time exporting 1080p as 4k
