UPDATED 5-11-20 I was able to solve the problem by downloading Handbrake program. I used that to convert the troublesome .mp4 video into .m4v format. Then, I could import media and then drag it into the timeline.

What mp4 video? Follow the instructions exactly, please

I found two solutions. First was to download Handbrake and convert the mp4 file to an m4v file. Then, it worked.

Second solution was to upgrade to Vegas Movie Studio 17.0 Platinum. Then the original troublesome mp4 worked just fine.

van-w, My problem is if I just click on a movie file, the program crashes. I can't even get it onto the timeline. I need help or maybe a new download. I tried to re-load the program but it was the same problem. I need help. thanks. I have been using Vegas for many years. I hate that one cannot even email a question to the web site. No help from them at all!! Their service is bad. I miss the old days when Vegas was in Madison and one could at least make a phone call or email. Not good!!

PS My problem is with Studio 17.0 Platinum!!

Vegas still is in Madison but no phone calls nowadays.

Go to Musicvid's post further up for the link to provide information required. Without knowing what's in your mp4 files no one can help you.

roger-b1, My original problem was a downloaded mp4 file instantly crashed Vegas Movie Studio 9 platinum. That was corrected when I opened that mp4 file in Handbrake and then saved it as m4v. Then it went in safely into Vegas.

Another thing you can try is what Vegas tech support told me for another problem. Here is what they said,

"For our first troubleshooting step, I would like you to reset your software. To reset your software, you simply need to double click the program's icon while holding down Ctrl+Shift. This will bring up a window asking if you would like to delete the cache. Check the box then click okay and your program should start."

I am also having problems importing mp4 files. I am very unhappy with this software. To think I recommended it to others at my job who are also making purchases, I regret it now. I have too many projects to keep having to convert all the files through other software (Handbrake). I was previously using Vegas Pro 12 and I had no problems importing my mp4 files. I upgraded to MS Platinum17 and have had nothing but issues. Are there any other solutions?

@roger-b1 @Jonette-Mungo

Unless you post details of your files as per the link Musicvid provided earlier no-one can help you. As you are probably aware 'mp4' is just a container and can contain a variety of codecs. Also where have your problem files come from?

roger-b1 wrote on 5/22/2020, 8:37 AM

I have tried several versions of MP4 and all of them close the program. All of them, MOV seems to work. But I like to shoot with MP4. I have several iMemory files that will not edit in Vegas. I think a new download might work. But I do not know how to get it.

I have Movie Studio Platinum 17 and it's doing the same crashing thing. They need to fix this as soon as possible. I had 13 before and it worked well for me.

AU4 wrote on 5/28/2020, 8:28 PM

@Musicvid  I also created my own thread, but what was described in the original post - the crashing - is also happening on version 17. That might be something that folks are interested in knowing.

I just acquired Vegas Movie Studio 17 Platinum and any mp4 or mv4 crash the program instantly when trying to add. I am in contact with the support team but the say they can add the sample mp4 I sent. It seems odd to me that mp4 being a widely used format for everyday shooting that a program with this background cannot handle. I have Vegas Pro 11 and absolutely no issue, on the same computer and it eats these files with ease. I'll wait for the outcome of the support ticket
