Program crashes when recording to the timeline

huskereurocat wrote on 8/21/2019, 10:46 PM

I am soooooo frustrated. MSP16 (build 142) crashes every time I try to record to the timeline. I get maybe a minute or so into recording and the program stops responding. The only way that I have found to repair this is to reset using the Ctl+Shift method. That is getting very old, very fast. I have to do this for every project and that can mean resetting two - three times per week. There has to be a solution?

Edit: My main recording is 2560x1440 and some transitions that I use are 1920x1080 .mp4's. Stills that I insert into the timeline are saved stills from the 2560x1440 footage. I don't know if that will make a difference or not, but thought I would let you know.

Sorry, I don't understand. How and what are you "recording" directly to the timeline? Vegas MSP 16 isn't really designed to do that. Or are you really recording a "file" and opening that in Vegas? If so, what is in the "file"? Start here:

MSP 16 has audio tracks that I use one of them to record commentary to my football games that I record. I've been doing that for 3 years now starting with MSP13. I record my game play in OBS,import that into MSP16, make cuts to the track, add transitions at the beginning and end of each clip via VASST Event tools, then record to an audio track my commentary on the game. It's worked great until MSP16 and all has gotten worse as new builds have come out. Now I'm to the point where I have to hard reset the program before I start the audio commentary recording phase of the project, everytime or the program will crash during recording. If its not designed to record voice over, then why would it include the ability to do that?

Edit: I just reset the program and I was able to voice over record a full 30-minutes on a separate audio track. But like I said, that process is getting very old.

Just frustrated and sorry, I don't mean to take it out on you. I'm about ready to hang this program up and go to a different video editor. I just don't know at this point if Vegas Pro would be any better. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit 2: Here is a screen shot of my project properties!

@Musicvid MVP is designed for recording. That's why the audio tracks have a "Arm for record" option and a mike icon appears on the preview toolbar. Perhaps it's not available in Vegas Pro?

@huskereurocat What are you using to record? A plugged in mike? What is your sound system? Do you get a crash report? Possibly a conflict somewhere. Have you tried raising it with Magix Support with a ticket?

huskereurocat wrote on 8/22/2019, 9:09 PM

I have a ticket in currently with Magix. Just waiting to here back from them.

I use a headset with mic plugged into my PC via USB. Been using that setup (not same headset) for 2 years now.

Not sure what you mean by sound system. Here is a snapshot of my pref setting for audio device.

Where would I find the crash report? I see an ErrorReportLauncher.exe at C:\Program Files\VEGAS\Movie Studio Platinum 16.0 but it does nothing when I double click it.

.The OP said he is recording video to the timeline. The word "audio" wasn't even mentioned in his rambling post.

Since he has since clarified, it may be the audio driver selection or buffers in Vegas. Search.

Non-ASIO driver choice in Vegas does not support duplexing (monitoring). That may be the problem.

Yeah, I know that. For seventeen years. Sorry for spouting earlier.

I took the mention of audio tracks and recording commentary (in the third post) as indicating audio was being recorded, not video. But anyway @Musicvid please stick around as with your audio experience you might be the best person to solve the problem.

@huskereurocat There are error report files "erpt" at C:\Users\"User Name"\AppData\Local\Vegas\ErrorReport, but whether they are applicable I don't know. I have several, all 177kb, which is puzzling as VMS rarely crashes on me.

huskereurocat wrote on 8/22/2019, 10:30 PM

122 in my ErrorReport folder with 8 zipped folders that went to Magix. I have not heard from them on any of them, and I guess that I wouldn't expect to unless I made a support ticket. I suppose this would be good information to share with the support agent that I'm corresponding with.

@huskereurocat

Try the ASIO or HD Audio driver for your card, not Mapper.

huskereurocat wrote on 8/23/2019, 12:15 AM

In the middle of rendering a project, but I'll give that a shot when I'm done. Most likely, I'll have to wait until I start the next project or start a dummy project to see if it works or not. Since I did the hard reset, everything is rock solid. But then it is after every hard reset, until the next project rolls around.

Thanks for your feedback and I'll let you know if, or not, it works. 😬

I have three choices for Audio. Not familiar with ASIO or what it stands for. I'm unsure why the HD Audio is not a choice though. If I'm not mistaken it is one of the drivers that comes with the Nvidia software that I have with my GTX 1060. I only have my Mpow headset /mic for speakers on my desktop PC.

Musicvid wrote on 8/23/2019, 6:35 PM

You want Direct Sound Surround mapper, which is HD Audio, because it offers full bit depth, full duplex, low latency ASIO support. Microsoft mapper does not, since it has not changed a bit since Windows 95b!.. Search and read If you do not understand the terminology.

Does your USB Mic install its own driver that shows up when it is plugged in? If so, try it also.
