Can you post the file's MediaInfo.

alan2782 wrote on 2/3/2020, 9:51 AM

Yes will do but not for many hours as I'm away from my machine. Thank you.

Can I find the media properties from the Windows file "properties" screen or is there some other utility I should use?

Start Here.

Some versions of QT need the Pro Res plugin to read the files. V17 has a built in reader, 13 doesn't.

alan2782 wrote on 2/3/2020, 11:22 AM

Ah that sounds like it could be the issue. I did a quick Google for ProRes plugin and didn't see it. By chance can you direct me to it? Thanks.

Apple used to provide a Pro Res playback codec for Windows but I can't find it and they don't have it on their site anymore. I will keep looking.

do you guys need more media information? any idea how to get vegas 13 to fully read that prores 422 hq file?

Musicvid wrote on 2/4/2020, 6:43 PM

I'm afraid it won't.

Just convert it in Handbrake.

I haven't seen the original plugin mentioned in many years.

alan2782 wrote on 2/5/2020, 11:57 AM

well, thanks for responding.

i tried in handbrake and a few other free or cheap converters. they turn out fine but i suspect no better than the h.264/mp4 versions the videographer provided. i was thinking it probably makes no difference to any viewer but converting for dvd and blu-ray would be better done from the 50gb .mov files than from the 5gb mp4 files

So i guess my choice now is to buy vegas 17 or use the 5gb files (DVDA converts for blu-ray/dvd).

(as i recall, using handbrake or other converters to mpeg2 yielded smaller files, like 1gb, but i don't recall... certainly they were no larger than the 5gb mp4s

Do you think there would be any noticeable difference in the dvd or blu-ray between:

  1. directly converting the ProRes files for dvd/blu-ray in vegas17 compared with
  2. using the h.264 mp4 files i already have? (assume the mp4s were created at best quality from the original source)
  3. or maybe use handbrake to create files (from the ProRes) in formats that DVDA would use without re-converting for dvd/blu-ray?

#3 is impossible, sorry.

#2 is do-able.

#1 is better, but is it worth the extra time? You decide.

@alan2782 Purchasing an upgrade to VP17 is the simplest solution going forward, just check out the minimum system requirements beforehand.
