Remove from project and delete file(s)

diverG wrote on 10/2/2020, 6:46 AM

VP18 (334). Titles says it all.

Select clip on timeline and delete from timeline. This is OK. Now go to the bin and locate clip. R.Click and select "Remove from project and delete file(s)" Error mssg appears.

Is this normal?

Likewise set focus to clip on timeline, go to bin and select "Remove from project and delete file(s)" Error mssg appears.

Can only delete clip via 'Explorer' when Vegas is closed.

Note: mouse operation viewed by normal RH operator.

It is telling you to right-click on the MTS file, and see if the Attribute "Read-only" is checked. If so, clear and save it. If you transferred your file from another drive or downloaded it, they quite often are marked Read-only or even Blocked. Or, you may not be running Vegas as Administrator.

diverG wrote on 10/2/2020, 7:21 AM

First thing I checked before posting. RO Attribute not set. Will check run as admin. Hadn't realised it was mandatory. Will retest. Thanks.

Edit:

Vegas now running in Admin. Problem still exists. Can delete file from timeline. Go to Bin and still cannot delete. Same Mssg Box. Can only delete files completley with VP closed

Did you try deleting after closing Vegas?

@ adis-a3097.

Last but 1 line from bottom in origonal post. In the past I have always been able to delete from within Vegas, hence questions

Does it make a difference if "close media files when not the active application" is unchecked? or checked?

Musicvid wrote on 10/2/2020, 8:46 AM

@diverG Maybe it's something unique to V18, which I don't have.

diverG wrote on 10/2/2020, 8:49 AM

Tried Checked & Unchecked. Closed & opened vegas between changes. No problems deleting within VP17.

For me this is a VP18 problem.

Have created 'test project' in VP17. Many clips in Bn & on timeline. Can select a few clips in the Bin, then R click "Remove from project and delete file(s)". The files are deleted after confirming in a warning window. Close project.

Open same project in VP18. Still plenty of clips in Bin & on timeline. Again select clips in bin but as stated in op the files cannot be deleted. Tested on 3 different pc's. Same response.

Question. Is this the new norm for VP18?

In VP18, I just created a new project. I then added two images to the timeline and then deleted the two images from the timeline which left them in Project Media. I then right-clicked each one individually in Project Media and chose the "Remove from project and delete files" option. On the prompt that appeared, I said "Yes". In looking where those files were located, those files are now gone in the windows File Explorer.

Jack S wrote on 10/3/2020, 8:33 AM

@diverG As per @jetdv's comment, this works for me also. The only thing I did different was to delete from Project Media without deleting from the timeline.

In VP,18 I can select 2 clips on timeline and delete. Then go to the bin and choose "Remove from project and delete files" option. Still the same error message. Have also tried with 'VP run as administrator'.

Same operation with VP17 works perfectly. Cannot see why VP18 should be different.

Yesterday I uninstalled VP18 and reinstalled 334 to no avail.

I am also finding differences in dragging clips to the timeline. See my other recent thread.

VP18 is proving to be a disappointment. I can only delete files by noting name/ref and deleteing in W10 explorer.

Sorted. Ctrl+shift+start Vegas. Can now delete correctly. Strange bearing in mind it was a clean install of VP 2 days ago. Thanks to all offering assistance. Much appreciated.

Not so strange because most a new install will save your made changes in settings and a reset does what it says: everything back to the default settings.

Are you saying an unistall via conrol panel, registry clean, reboot and then install via Magix installer still picks up old settings? I can see that it might if I opened an existing project but for my test purposes it was a new project. The only common feature was the video files added to the bin for test purposes. If so it could explain the many user problems featuring on this forum

Only a fresh install on a new machine is totally fresh.

Have now repeated test on clean new install of W10. Similar experience in that vegas reports files as maybe write protected but does actually delete the files.

Have also managed to install vp18 trial on 3 other machines.

1 Two machines responsed as per my clean install test.

2 One machine as per my original post in that the files cannot be deleted from disk within VP

I contend there is not a consistent response between installations of VP, others will have this problem.

I am also experiencing this issue but only with the latest version of VP18 (build 482).

I right-click an event in the timeline, choose "Select in Project media list", right-click on the selected item and choose "Remove from project and delete files", click "Yes to All"; it vanishes from the project list and the prompt "Are you sure you want to delete file <name> permanently from your drive?" appears; I click "Yes to All" and the error "There was an error deleting file <name> The file may be read only" appears.

The files are not read only.

Intriguingly, if the project has not been saved yet, the error does not occur but as soon as I save the project, the error happens.

Regards

David

@ David Johns

Can confirm that project media can be deleted from the drive either by selecting clip on timeline or project media panel.

I had a major crash a coulple of days after last update and have reset Vegas by starting up with Ctrl+Shift keys.

That was how I cleared the problem initailly.

Strange how only 2 users have this problem but reassuring that I am not alone.

Edit: This problem has re occurred together with another odd problem. Resetting Vegas via Ctrl+Shift clears the problem. Just need to reset the Vegas Window and add my additional toolbar tools.

Remember to uncheck Studio RGB (16 to 235) checkbox in Scopes

Starting to look as though VP18 is not rock stable. [ added26/03/21]

Edit 2 Tried with new project re jetdv, still cannot delete from drive via vp18.

Same pc, same test, same clips vp17, no problem. The fault lies in vp18, regular resetting vp is not an ideal solution.
