Removing unwanted sections of video and rejoining the wanted sections

Vegas Pro 19. Have 1 hr video and want to remove deadtime and then join the sections on both sides of the removed deadtime. Am using Split and Delete on the deadtime area, but when move video section after the "split section", the "deleted" section is not gone. This seems like it would be a very basic function.

The original file will not be changed. You have to go to File - Render As and render out a new file with those sections removed. You will get a new file based on your timeline. VEGAS is a non-destructive editor. It will not modify your original file. It will let you create a new file with the video segments you want (from 1 or more video files)

@Suzonne-Vann As @jetdv says the part of the clip you 'delete' is not gone but it's hidden, you should be able to move the remaining sections of video on the timeline to close the gaps where you deleted sections, but if you want to you can move those sections apart again & drag the end of the clip to expose some of what you deleted, or you can change the mouse mode using the buttons at the bottom to the Slip tool, this doesn't change the length of the edited/split clip but will let you slide the video to show what part of video is shown in the clip after you've deleted the ends & start etc, ,

Hmm..., I guess the Interactive Tutorials were removed? Too bad, they were a big help with questions like this.

@Suzonne-Vann, I'm sorry if I misunderstand your issue and the following is overly basic for you. But it sounds to me from your description like you are deleting a section, and then instead of moving (as you say in your description), you are trimming the edge of one of the remaining events to close the hole. As has been noted, this simply reveals the section you cut out.

Think of events on the timeline as windows that enable you to see the media behind them. You can change the size of the window (by trimming an edge) to show more or less of the media behind the window. When you make one event bigger to close the hole, you're simply "opening the window" again and showing the very frames of video you'd wanted to eliminate.

So, instead of trimming the event to close the hole, you want to move the events next to each other. Drag the events (not just the edge, but drag the entire event) next to each other until they snap together. This is what @Former user suggests above. Then, if you want them to move as a single piece:

  • Select one of them
  • Hold the Ctrl Key and select the other one
  • Right-click either of them and choose Group | Create New from the context menu

Once they are grouped together like this, you can move them as a single unit.

There is no way to make one true event out of the two of them once you've split them and removed a section other than the render suggestion made by @jetdv above.

@jetdv, @Former user, and @gary-rebholz - thank-you all so much for taking the time to reply. No answer or suggestion is too basic for me at this stage. I'm an old-hand at audio editing, but this is my first go at significant video editing and Vegas is new to me. What I am wanting to do seems to me at least to be a very basic objective for video editing. I will try all your suggestions when my 2-hr render to .mp4 completes. Thanks again so much!
