Rendering a black screen about 6 seconds in length.

Jeff-Rolando wrote on 5/14/2020, 7:54 PM

After editing a short video, I rendered it, and it only took about two seconds. (I thought something was wrong.) The file rendered was a black screen about six seconds in length. I tried again, making sure to save the Vegas file before attempting to render it again, with the same results. I found a work-around by pure chance; I opened the Vegas file through my file explorer, which opened in a separate Vegas window. I was then able to render the video as normal, which took about 5 minutes, and rendered the video I had edited. Now, this same thing has happened for a second time. I used the same work-around. I wonder if anyone has any idea why this might be happening. (I thought it might have happened because I might have forgotten to save the project before rendering, but that was not the case, as I saved before retrying with the first video, and also saved today before it happend again. Thanks for reading.

make sure you don't have "render selection" enabled and also don't have any selection made on the timeline, or make sure you have selected the whole timeline.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't even know where "render selection" is. Also, I have successfully rendered a few videos before, and I don't select anything; I just save it and choose "render as." Remember, I was able to render both videos successfully, but only after I opened them through file explorer, which opened them in a second Vegas window. Thanks

Uncheck Render Loop Region only. It's in your render properties dialog.

You can also collapse the loop region. Don't ask what that is, its covered in your Interactive Tutorials, What's This? Icon, and Vegas Help.

You are invited to begin your Vegas learning curve here, as we did. There simply aren't enough volunteers to handle hundreds of basic questions every week.

Sorry, I didn't get the command exactly right. When you select RENDER AS there are these options. Yours may look different because of a different version of Vegas but it will be similar. It says RENDER LOOP REGION only. If you have a selection, even if it is not highlighted, sometimes it will render this section only. On your problem timeline, do you have a 6 second black segment?

Jeff-Rolando wrote on 5/14/2020, 9:19 PM

Thanks again for replying, but under "render as" I have two columns, FORMAT and TEMPLATES. I have RENDER OPTIONS (not in there) and CUSTOMIZE TEMPLATE (I don't think it's in there, is it?) I have Vegas 17, I don't find a Render properties dialogue box, just render as, which looks nothing like the photo you sent. Thanks anyway.

In lieu of me having the correct version, do you have a loop area selected on your timeline? If you do, clear it. Maybe someone can post where this is located on Version 17.

Thanks. I have never selected "render loop region" nor unselected it, (never seen it,) but I was able to render the video, only by opening it in an other window. I didn't select a loop region (knowingly) Don't know what a loop region is. No, I have no black segment in the video., just a simple camcorder video, and I just cut off the beginning and the end. But thanks just the same. At least I found a work-around. . .

Your render dialog looks something like this. Happy Learning!

A Loop Region and inprogram resources look like this:

DOES THIS HELP?

Going forward, respectfully, please help yourself by searching the available resources first, before asking. THANKS!

Thanks for your time and effort in preparing those screenshots, but my Render As screen looks like this.

My render options are different too

I think I understand what a "loop region" is now; looks like a gap in layman's terms. There were no such gaps or Loops in either of the two projects I mentioned; I simply cut off the beginning and the end of both.

I appreciate that you tried to help, and I suppose if your program is different, it may be impossible.

I'll look in to the tutorials you recommended. Thank you. (I'm not sure how many hours it might take to learn just why rendering would create a black screen video of about six seconds in length, on two different days, on two different projects, and why opening the Vegas files in different windows through file explorer (as a welcome and inexplicable work-around) would render normal, complete videos of the two projects in question, but I will look into it.) It may be less time consuming to just use the work-around. Not that I wouldn't like to become more knowledgeable about this powerful amazing program, time permitting, but I am among the fortunate who are still working during the epidemic, and creating simple videos while not working, but I'll try to find the time.

I don't think it was unreasonable to think that there might be someone on this forum who had seen this issue before. (Not just the rendering of the six second black screen video, but the inexplicable work-around I stumbled into.)

Thanks

@Jeff-Rolando Maybe you only rendered out the audio when it went quick? An easy way is to accidentally mute the video track.

A loop region looks like this.

To get rid of it quickly press keyboard keys I and then O, not zero.

To generate it initially just drag with the mouse in that region.

It's coloured blue here, which means that if you play the video it will continue to loop within that region. Pressing 'Q' will toggle it's looping and colour capabilities on and off.

@Former user VP17 I just discovered is a little more sophisticated than previously. The render loop region option only appears if you already have a loop region selected, it defaults to checked/enabled.

If no loop region is selected then it doesn't appear, it's like greyed out, really blacked out, top item, difficult to see.

@Jeff-Rolando good to know. I am on an older version and it is always available. Sometimes it will render a loop area even if it is not an active loop.

walter-i. wrote on 5/15/2020, 3:07 PM

It also happened to me that only a short area was rendered.
Then the "Render loop only" box was selected - for reasons I couldn't understand - although no loop region was selected in the project.
By deselecting the "Render loop only" box, the entire project was ultimately rendered.
