Rendering interlaced video

JackWhite wrote on 10/1/2017, 2:46 AM

Can anyone help getting the best settings to render interlaced video. I have 1920x1080 50i avchd video. I want to render as best quality MP4 files. I'd like to use the new Magix avc codec as that seems quickest with my nvidea 550 to card. My project settings are usually set to "upper field first" to match the input media, but I've read I might be better setting that to progressive.

Thanks!

What is the destination for your video?

Do you have Vegas Pro 15?

JackWhite wrote on 10/1/2017, 4:26 AM

Just for viewing on TV or PC monitor. I am using the trial of Pro 15, seeing if it is worth my upgrading from 10.

I would make a 50i intermediate of your final video in Vegas and encode in Handbrake, which has a really good Decomb filter.

Or to keep it in Vegas, use the Smart Deinterlace filter FX that was new in VP14 and much better than the internal options we had previously, then render with the MAGIX AVC codec.

See this thread: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-improve-the-quality-of-my-avc-h-264-renders--104642/ I have not updated it for VP15 yet, but it has a section about deinterlacing, and you can apply the MainConcept encoder guidelines to the MainConcept mode in the MAGIX AVC encoder. The MainConcept encoder within that Magix encoder is a newer version which should give more quality-per bit than the older one, but almost certainly not as much as using the x264 codec, which is what the external tools including Handbrake use.

If speed it paramount for you, the QSV or NVENC modes should be faster than the MainConcept mode in the MAGIX AVC encoder but I don't know how the quality compares. Try it for yourself.

Thanks Nick, I'll try this.

If you are rendering for TV, there is no need to deinterlace. Computer might benefit.

Exactly, de-interlacing will always cost some quality (sharpness,) and in worst cases the de-interlaced footage will stutter when it's played at 25p.

Thanks all. Cornico - I don't have that template in my Magix AVC list? Is that custom? I have a bunch of "Internet HD" templates (which I had thought must only be just for uploading to the the Internet) but they are all "p", not "i" templates?

JackWhite wrote on 10/1/2017, 10:56 AM

I think I'd also rather just render to a progressive video so that it can be played equally on TV and elsewhere.

So I suppose my question should be - my video is interlaced 50i and I want to render to progressive mp4 - what should I set the project and render settings to!

Be carefull. I trust that new Magix AVC codec not for an inch. When I use Cornico's setting with Encode Mode on Mainconcept, encoding takes twice as long as with Sony AVC codec (second setting). When I use the Encode Mode NV Encoder, it's surprisingly quick, but the result is unusable (interlaced lines and just a 1 minute timeline becomes a 1,5 GB File)

If it's not for internet upload, I wouldn't deinterlace, you will lose sharpness and will get stutter for fast moving objects.

I agree with 3POINT. Render twice.

JackWhite wrote on 10/1/2017, 12:02 PM

Thanks 3Point. Can you let me know what project and render settings you would recommend?

Are you using a media player to play it on TV? or some other device? I always use the Bluray templates and enable MPEG audio for a media player. For a bluray disc, I use PCM audio.

JackWhite wrote on 10/1/2017, 12:37 PM

usually just streaming it. The Blueray templates are video only and when I try and customise the audio option is greyed out?

3POINT wrote on 10/1/2017, 12:46 PM

I recommend the SAVC rendertemplate that Cornico showed (the middle one).

Former user wrote on 10/1/2017, 12:50 PM

You can enable the audio for the bluray templates but it is mpeg audio. Not the standard for bluray or DVD, but fine for computer or media players. If you want to do that there is a video over here that shows you how Watch the video on the first post.
