Rendering shuts down my PC (V20/B214)

Silentium_Tremendum wrote on 12/21/2022, 5:12 PM

Hi.

When i render the video about 3h long i render in HEVC 4k 60fps and especially if im doing upscaling from 1080p to 2160p this problem happens to me. It shuts down my pc after some percentage of render, more or less, every time percentage is different. But confusing part is that it doesnt shut down my pc completely. My monitor loses signal, also my keyboard and mouse stops working and my PC's ventilators start to spin faster and they became louder. So i cant shut down PC with keyboard, or mouse, neither the power button works on my pc case, only way is to kill the power for the PC. I dont like to shut down pc like that, its not good for it.
I also found old videos that people had problems when rendering shuts down their pc, but that videos are 6-11y ago recorded. In their solution is to disable half of the processor cores through "Task manager/Vegas/Set affinity". But i would like to use all off my cores, not half of them. I mean threads, not cores. Also i dont know is their pc is not shut down completely like mine, i found nobody that speaks about that on the web. So if you have idea what can fix my problem i would be grateful.

Im using Vegas 20 (Build 214)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950x
GPU: RTX 3080
RAM: 64GB 3200mhz
SSD: M.2 Samsung 980 Pro
Motherboard: ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (Wi-Fi)
Windows 11 Pro

The first thing I would do is determine if there is something going on with Vegas that is causing the lock up or if it is a more generic issue caused by loading up the CPU. Can you run some other apps that will fully saturate the CPU? Perhaps Cinebench or Handbrake using H265 encode (better multithreading vs. H264). If the issue only occurs in Vegas then at least you know there is no hardware issue with your computer and there is some soft of software conflict going on with Vegas causing the issue.

@Silentium_Tremendum Presumably you've checked your problem is not caused by overheating?

andyrpsmith wrote on 12/21/2022, 6:12 PM

Download the free GPUZ and have it running in the background with sensors on and saving to file. You will be able see both temp and power draw of the GPU and temp of CPU.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

13th gen i913900K - water cooled, 96GB RAM, 4TB M2 drive, 4TB games SSD, 2TB video SSD, GPU RTX 4080 Super, Windows 11 pro

I hope you're not overclocking. We only hear this complaint once or twice in a year, and it most often has to do with fins and fans.

I did Cinebench right now and the results are very nice.

2nd in Multicore test: 23838

1st in Singlecore: 1588

and 4th in Multi processor ratio: 15.64

in Multicore test the CPU was constant on 100% with minimal noise from ventilators. I have silent ventilators from "Be quiet" company and i barely heard them. I dont believe that if there is problem with my pc that problem is in my CPU, maybe is in GPU or some other components, if problem is in my hardware at all. Anyway when i play some games, GPU works just fine, no crashes, i play in 4k/max settings.

Here we are rendering a 3 hour video with upscaling plus possibly other FX. Does any other software on the system put as much demand on the system as Vegas does during the rendering? Possibly not which is why Vegas coughs.

Anyway the results of temperature monitoring as suggested by @andyrpsmith should give us a clue.

I dont believe, PC works fine, im monitoring it on Nvidia's performance monitor.

Download the free GPUZ and have it running in the background with sensors on and saving to file. You will be able see both temp and power draw of the GPU and temp of CPU.

Im using as i said above already that from Nvidia, but ill try that also.

Im not overclocking. My PC is practicaly new, i bought it 1y ago and i barely used it. I dont know how other people solved their problem, but i cant find nowhere same problem as mine, which is anoying.

Month ago i lost my nerves bc i tried to render that time some easier video. It was 7h long, but it was in HEVC 1080p 60fps. And same problem was happening. So i decided to give it a try every day few times per day, bc pc never shuts down on same % of rendering. Than one day it succeded to finish. But everything should work normaly with PC or Vegas, i dont need that to lose my nerves bc off some dumb rendering problem.

I'll try that but tomorrow, im going to sleep now. Ty and i send results tomorrow.

Also there is 1 more thing which i noticed in Vegas and which is weird to me.

When i go to Preferences/Video/Dynamic RAM Preview max, which is normally set at 5%, and if i have bounch of RAM than i could raise that amount to 30 or 50% (or more), but when i do that i notice that when im watching the video while editing that fps under the video shows less fps than when i use 5%. So thats weird bc it should be opposite. Its not a big difference, maybe in 2-5fps, but still it shows less. So i wonder why and does it happen to you?

Good night

If the issue is with the AI-powered upscale Fx perhaps do a pre-render just to upscale the media that needs to be upscaled and then render out the project at project resolution.

Silentium_Tremendum wrote on 12/22/2022, 8:08 PM

I believe i discovered the problem, but still i dont understand how it is happening. Anyway ill send some info which i saw through video from john dennis.

I found only once that Vegas showed up in Reliability monitor + 2x main problem which is "Audio Plugin Scan Server". Other times Reliability monitor first shows 2x "Audio Plugin Scan Server" + (after few minutes or hours) "Windows". In "Summary" it is written that "Audio Plugin Scan Server" has stopped working, both of them, and for Windows is written that "Windows was not properly shut down". Now as i understand what is happening is that Vegas crashes probably bc of some audio plugin issue, and than after a while when i turn my pc off (kill him from power) or when i turn him back on, that message "Windows was not properly shut down" appears in system.

Anyway i dont understand what can be wrong. Bc my sound drivers are fine and i have no issues anywhere with sound on when i use my pc except when i render.

And info of "Windows" error details from Reliability monitor:

Description
The previous system shutdown at 4:14:41 AM on ‎12/‎21/‎2022 was unexpected.

So to repeat 1 more time that Vegas only appeared once in Reliability monitor, followed by 2x APSS "Audio Plugin Scan Server". Windows error after that starts to happen every time after 2x APSS.

But i see that some other day similar problem appeared with different Windows problem, this time it was written in Summary that for Windows was "Hardware error", and much more things happened at that time.

It started with "Controls the DTS audio processing object." which happened in 8:13PM

Description
Faulting Application Path:    C:\Windows\System32\DTS\PC\APO4x\DtsApo4Service.exe

Than this time was followed by 4x APSS at 8:15PM, than i got 8x "Windows" (Hardware error) from 8:15PM - 8:19PM, here is how 1 of them looks like:

Description
A problem with your hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

Problem signature
Problem Event Name:    LiveKernelEvent

Locale ID:    1033

Than in 8:19PM is again "Controls the DTS audio processing object.", and after that in 8:20PM is again 2x APSS (Audio Plugin Scan Server).

When i look at this it is strange to me, bc that crashes doesnt happen to me nowhere except in Vegas. I mean i dont spend much time on my PC anymore and i dont do demanding stuff like with Vegas. I sometimes play some games on max settings and everything is fine (games are demanding). That games are probably closest to Vegas in demandingness. Im considering to try some other program just to see will same problem happen there, but i dont know which one. Since i started editing im only on Vegas and i dont know which one is good like Vegas...

Anyway if you reached this text and you read all, than thank you. You have details now as much as you want, but better rest now during these holiday days, go in nature, this can wait.

After all God is probably playing with me, He probably doesnt want me to do editing or this project on which im working... :)

Enjoy

Download the free GPUZ and have it running in the background with sensors on and saving to file. You will be able see both temp and power draw of the GPU and temp of CPU.

I did that right now, here are results:

GPU:

Temp in Celsius: before rendering was 47C, last recorded info is 52C

chip Power draw: 10W before and after was 47W

CPU:

Temp: 47C and 70C

@Silentium_Tremendum
If at Options/Preferences/File I/O "Enable Legacy HEVC decoding" is checked, uncheck it and try to render again.
I saw this a lot of times working with and/or rendering to UHD HEVC files.
For this the developers are working on a solution for the next update.

I just want to let you know that i solved this problem. Also PC shuts down only when i render something complicated, on simple videos i dont need to do what i do for complicated videos.

So what i do for complicated videos and how did i solved this problem is that i just went to the Options/Preferences/Video and i set Dynamic RAM to 0%.

At that time when succeded i was in wonder bc i was sure that i already tried this and it didnt worked. While i was searching for solution for this problem maybee i did something which with setting Dynamic RAM to 0% in combination helped me to succed in render, to fix the problem. Anyway 4 months have passed and im still doing the same to render complicated videos, but at least i can render them now.

This was solution for me, so i just wanted to share it.
