Rendering with transparent background!

3POINT wrote on 2/25/2020, 1:36 AM

Sometimes, for animations, I need to render with transparent backgrounds. For this purpose I always used a QuickTime 7 template. On my (still) W7 laptop this is no issue, both with VPro17 and VMS16. On my W10 desktop I'm missing the option to render with QuickTime, also both in Vpro17 and VMS16.

Is this a W10 vs W7 difference or misses my desktop the QuickTime codec? What to do to get my desktop rendering transparent backgrounds (again)? Or are there other options, besides rendering to still images with transparency (which I don't like)?

Is Quicktime installed on your Windows 10 system and is the Quicktime support enabled in VP17 (Options/Preferences/Deprecated Features)?

Another choice is using uncompressed AVI which supports alpha channel.

Also, Magic YUV and UT Codec (both AVI) support Alpha, but you'll need to do them from within Happy Otter.

DNxHD (.MOV) used  to be my choice for Alpha, but UT took the cake in my latest tests. UT 422 is both smaller and higher quality in informal testing.

There are quite a few alpha rendering options in HappyOtterScripts.

In addition to the use of RenderPlus, the other render tool, RenderEvents can also be used for the alpha channel.

Just a note to add that, in the next build, the FrameServer will be automatically configured to the correct 32bit setting.

Thanks for all the answers and solutions. The reason for me to use the quicktime codec is/was the very small filesizes it generates of my selfmade graphic animations (lowerthirds etc) and to use them in other projects. Of course I could use for this purpose also the nesting function of Vegas but since I do a lot of editing with VegasMovieStudio, this is no option.

I think, I will reinstall QuickTime 7.

There's a description of "how" to to perform the necessary modification on page 2 so that avi codecs other than uncompressed can be used inside of Vegas. You will need a hex editor.

@wwaag that's amazing. Can't wait for the official release! Rendering alpha files with that small of a file size is worth a purchase on it's own.

Quick question about the quality of those small, transparent files. Are they nice and sharp/crisp when you add them to projects? Would you use the Straight unmatted or premultiplied option when removing the backgrounds? Also how do they look when you add motion blur to it and then render it with a transparent background?

3POINT wrote on 2/25/2020, 3:08 PM

@ScrapyardFilms Item for your next video tutorial.

ScrapyardFilms wrote on 2/25/2020, 3:20 PM

@3POINT I have a good one on rendering with transparent backgrounds already but Wayne's HOS definitely makes my way obsolete if the quality holds up with those microscopic file sizes. If I do some testing with it and get great results, I'll definitely add it to the list of tutorials. It'll get HOS in to the eyes of more VEGAS users for sure.

3POINT wrote on 2/25/2020, 3:25 PM

I don't know how microscopic small the files are with HOS, till now I was always satisfied with the quality and small filesize generated with Quicktime.

@ScrapyardFilms

Good questions.

"Are they nice and sharp/crisp when you add them to projects?" Most of the codecs are considered "lossless" so you should not see any significant quality loss.

"Would you use the Straight unmatted or premultiplied option when removing the backgrounds? Also how do they look when you add motion blur to it and then render it with a transparent background?"

That's really up to the user to decide. HOS only provides a tool for rendering using a choice of codecs. It doesn't develop the codecs--it only provides a relatively easy means of accessing them from the Vegas timeline.

I have not used it for transparency recently, but I have vague memory of being alarmed at how low the bitrate was, considering transparency backgrounds and greenscreen work should be of the highest quality encode for least amount of problems. Is it possible to use any bitrate or artificially constrained to only low bitrates using quicktime for transparency

On few simple tests the dll heck didn't work well in VMS16, but png sequence went clean and lean.

Malowz is the genius in figuring out "what" to change. Once you know that, figuring out "how" is pretty simple in comparison.
