Small icons import and fill the screen. How do I stop this?

Jonathan-Hill wrote on 5/19/2022, 7:15 AM

Hey everyone.

So I made up a small logo that I wanted to scroll by on the bottom of the screen. When I imported the picture (.png) and dropped it on the timeline, it fills the screen (I think this is called upscaling) but I didn't want this to happen. I wanted it to stay the size that it was when created. In "pan and crop" there is an option under "source" called "stretch to fill frame" and I turn that to "off" but it seems to have no effect either way.

If anyone can tell me what the heck I am doing wrong, I would appreciate it.

I am able to get it back to size by using track motion but that's a big pain, it should be a lot easier then that.

I hope it's something very simple that I missed. Thanks for the help.

I did check through the other posts but nothing seemed to directly answer the issue with a good answer.

What resolution is your .png? What resolution is your video project?

Former user wrote on 5/19/2022, 7:34 AM

@Jonathan-Hill Hi, in the top boxes in Pan/Crop type the size of your project in Position - Width & Height

In Options/Preferences/Video (tab), is 'Adjust source media to better match project or render settings' (towards the bottom of the Properties window) checked as active? If yes, try turning it off.

Resolution of project 3840 x 2160, png is 111 x 66.

As you can see, in Pan/Crop even resizing the icon in width and height, there is no change.

Why would >> "stretch to fill frame" turned to "off" >> not correct the issue? What's it there for if not for this purpose?

In track motion I can change the size of the logo and it works great but why do I even have to do that? I just want my logos etc to stay their original size, as they were created. Bit of a pain when you have different size logos, pics etc and you have to do this to everyone of them.

@Jonathan-Hill but you haven't changed it

I think I'll make this my next tutorial - how to do this using a script!

@Former user I did change the width and height as suggested and it did nothing. I'll try again.

@Jonathan-Hill The image i'm using in that pic is about 500 x 500,

I doesn't look like you have keyframes added but It's better if you turn off the icon at the bottom that says Sync Cursor & put that timeline cursor at the beginning of the keyframe timeline, that way you don't get keyframes being added that can mess with your head,

Jonathan-Hill wrote on 5/19/2022, 11:47 AM

I just use track motion, I put in my logos pixel size and it reverts it back to what it should be.

However, reading the manual under "crop/pan", it says exactly what I was saying, If you select "no" it should keep it's original size. It doesn't. I don't think that this is working correctly. Is there an issue with it? Seems as if this is the place to do it and it doesn't. Nobody else has experienced this issue?

@Jonathan-Hill That is in relation to the dotted line box in Pan/Crop, if the box is 111 x 66, then clicking yes or no won't make any difference because that is the size of your png,

but if you make that dotted line box 3840 x 2160 as in my pic, the click No in the Stretch to Fill Frame, ironically it fills the frame 🤦‍♂️😂 that's why it's ticked Yes in my pics, 🤷‍♂️😂

Jonathan-Hill wrote on 5/19/2022, 3:12 PM

@Former user @jetdv @j-v @Dexcon @DMT3

So I went to Vegas and did as you requested. I can not make my dotted box 3840 x 2160. Wont do it. It will 2936 x 1096 as a max default and my logo is still a bit larger then the original.

I am hoping that some one read my last message about what manual says. That to me is where this should happen, Yes to fill the screen and no to keep as original size. I don't think this should be difficult in the least. I have two other video editors and it is just done, no issues or hassles. I have yet to ever see that yes or no feature do anything. Never has worked from day one.

Oh well, I'll just stick with using motion tracking. It has always been my friend.

@Jonathan-Hill, download this and put it in "My Documents"\Vegas Script Menu

The "Resize Logo.cs" file is what you want in that folder. You'll either need to restart VEGAS or go to Tools - Scripting - Rescan Script Menu.

Then select the image, go to Tools - Scripting - Resize Logo

Is that what you want to happen?

The tutorials will be coming out May 30 and June 6.

@Jonathan-Hill

Sorry, i was wrong, I thought you might have Lock aspect ratio On or something like that, so i had a play but it wasn't that, ....

So i exported my orig 565 x 528 image as 111 x 66, you can see the difference, yours is the little one in the middle,

When imported into Vegas the best i can get is 888 x 528 🤷‍♂️

At the moment i don't know why it won't let me/you do that, i rarely make images that small, & if i do use an image that is tiny it's on a 3840 x 2160 transparent png (i used green just so it could be seen,😁)

Easiest way I've found is to set the icon size to its original value in Track Motion, then position it in Pan/Crop.

john_dennis wrote on 5/19/2022, 7:53 PM

@Jonathan-Hill

  1. 111x66 is a very small logo for a UHD project.
  2. Watch this epic. Possibly, you need to set the Aspect Ratio in Pan/Crop to 16x9.

There have been some very good solutions offered in this thread. I'll admit that while I had Photoshop open to build the logo, I probably would have Resized the Canvas to 3840x2160 and avoided the whole issue.

Yelandkeil wrote on 5/20/2022, 3:40 AM

This can be used everywhere:

1, restore the icon size;

2, filter PnP, resize, rotate, relocate...

3, the PnP has a small bug currently, use filter Crop cutting the black edge away is one possibility.
