I just completed my Vegas 14 upgrade. WHen I try the Smart Upscale feature I get the message "This plug in requires OpenCL to function".

So what do I need to do to get this to work.

  • Do I need a new video card?
  • Is there a software install I am missing?

Thanks!!

You didn’t tell us anything about your system. How are we supposed to know whether you need a new video card without knowing what your current video card is?

That said, you could try the Intel runtime (which presumably converts OpenCL to Intel CPU code). You’ll need to scroll down on that link to OpenCL™ Runtime for Intel® Core™ and Intel® Xeon® Processors and pick the right driver for your system.

OK - I have an old video card - ATI Radeon HD 4350 - I was thinking that perhaps I need to upgrade to a newer card to use OPEN CL.

And Thanks again

The first thing I would try is upgrading the card’s driver and see if that installs OpenCL on your system.

If you have a graphics card and driver that support OpenCL, you'll also need to enable GP acceleration of video processing as described in section 1a here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-graphics-cards-gpu-acceleration-for-vegas-pro--104614/

If I don't enable that, I just get a black screen, not an error message. I have an AMD HD 6970.

What exactly is smart upscale anyway?

Does the algorithm borrow from Lanczos, or ?

I asked and the short answer I was given is in my comment here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/smart-upscale--104135/#ca645262

So I tried as suggested to install the run time only version of opencl and even after rebooting and restarting Vegas (and configuring as described above) , I got the same message. So I'm "guessing" what I need to do is get a video card that supports opencl. Does this make sense? I'd hate to upgrade and still have it not work.

Thanks

Did you try installing the appropriate version of Catalyst Software Suite from http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/ATI-Radeon-4000-Series-Drivers.aspx ?

Thanks Nick - I installed this. But have exactly the same issue. Note that when I try to set GPU acceleration of Video Processing, the only option I have is off - this after rebooting, restarting Vegas ,etc.

Sounds like you would need a newer card to do it. The only other option I can think of, if you are using a laptop or branded PC, is to see if there is an alternative driver from the manufacturer's website.

To be frank, you're not missing much. This plugin has a very minor effect (see other thread). Might not be worth the cost of upgrading hardware for.
