Some Mpeg2 files do not import correctly

Former user wrote on 8/16/2021, 7:09 PM

Disclaimer: I don't expect to get any help on this one since I'm not providing the "required" information. Plus, I've since uninstalled the program.

OS: Windows 10 1909

Hardware: Asus MB, Intel i9, 32GB Ram, Nvidia RTX series video

Program: Vegas Pro (edit) 18 Trial (All Default Settings)

Problem: Corrupted (?) truncated, sometimes pixelated MPG 2 videos upon import

I found that some (short < 3 minute) mpg (mpeg 2 files), do not import correctly using VP18 edit. This does not happen with Vegas Movie Studio 16 or VP9. When I imported them and dragged them to the timeline, the first few seconds appeared to be from the end of the same video. Then the normal start of the video was truncated by roughly the same amount (essentially paste and cut in). On some of these videos, there was obvious pixilation in places. I tried repeating the process with several different files by either importing and the dragging to the timeline or directly dragging the file to timeline.

I could not see that there was anything unusual with the properties of each video (Format, Resolution, Frame Rate, Wrapper, Codec, Bitrate...etc). In fact, out of the ten or so I tested, there were only 3. I had no other format issues, such as MP4/H264/AAC.

I was pretty excited to go with VP18, but this particular issue makes it difficult to use without re-encoding the problematic videos.

Thanks for reading this.

Mike

Since you are aware of the information needed for peer support, best of luck and thanks for sharing your story. It's an unusual one.

At least post MediaInfo for these videos so we have some idea what you are talking about.

Added and amended OP. Besides working fine with Vegas Studio 16, these also look fine in VLC, Handbrake and a couple of other programs I have.

Are these broadcast recordings?

Musicvid wrote on 8/17/2021, 7:57 PM

If they are downloads, it's hard to tell how many generations of encodes (or miscodes) they've been through. We call these "Frankenfiles." It's not unusual for them to play fine but not open correctly in an NLE. But since you say they opened in a previous version of Vegas, it remains curious. Assuming they are legit, non-copyrighted files, feel free to upload one that isn't working correctly to Drive or Dropbox. Otherwise, there isn't much help available, sorry to say.

If you'll post that URL I'll check out the downloads and report back to you.

Oh dear. My bad assumption So, that "digital" noise is the tail end of the video, looped back to the beginning.. Oh strange?

That site features downloads of low-quality rips and screen recordings of possibly copyrighted material. A look at my signature should tell you why, even though retired, I cannot comment further.

You may be OK with personal use, but many of our forum regulars earn income from producing, selling, and distributing original, copyrighted content; thus, the appearance of conflicts of interest needs to be considered.

Well, when I deleted my post with the offending link, my account got deleted. Probably something I clicked, so I had to create a new account.

Anyway, for the record, the problem Mpg's also don't import correctly in VP19. However, they import and work fine without error in VP17.

Thanks for all those that helped.

Mike

FWIW, The file opens correctly in VP14, VP18, and VP19 on this end. Best of luck!

Thanks Musicvid for checking it out on different versions. Hmm. Tried it myself on two different computers with same import issues, so I don't know what to think...unless I have to change something in the preferences. At this point, it's not worth the effort to keep fiddling. I'd love to purchase a VP17, but no 3rd party has it for a decent price. I waited too long I believe.

Hey thanks again for all the years of help you've brought to these forums.
