SONY FDR AX53 setting up

JohnJ wrote on 2/4/2022, 10:34 AM

I have a new Sony FDR AX53 camera which I am setting up to use for the first time in the field. An indicator on the left side screen just below the Face Recognition icon looks like a walking person pulling a wheeled suitcase. As I cannot find any reference to this I have no idea what it is for or how to get rid of it. Could somebody advise me please. Thank you, Johnj

Hi @JohnJ

I saw this post and grabbed my AX53 to check. I'll be honest, not seeing what you are. Could you give a bit more context as to what particular settings you are using on the camera itself: i.e. 4K/30p, XAVC-S, Bit Rate, etc., so I can set my camera up the same and look? Possibly even a screen shot/grab? My settings, which are under "Menu - Image Quality/Size":

REC Mode: 100Mbps

Frame Rate: 30p

Dual Video REC: Off

File Format: XAVC S 4K

Image Size M (8.3M)

From Menu - Shooting Mode - Movie

I do know there are a couple more Forum members who use this camera, as well as the AX100/AX700 (not sure if menu system exactly alike), and I also have the AX33 which is almost exactly the same. Possibly one of the other features you set within the "Setup" menu like "Peak" "White Balance" "Zebras", etc.

Let us know.

Sorry to go off-topic , but I have seen cave dweller hieroglyphics in museums from 5kBC that were more descriptive.

Hello, I have taken a shot of the icon in question, it is the one below the Face Recognition (Off) icon. The odd thing is that I bought 2 of these cameras and as far as I can see I have set them up in the same way but this icon does not appear on the other camera. Could someone kindly identify it's purpose and tell me how to delete it? Thank you, JohnJ

Could someone kindly identify it's purpose and tell me how to delete it?

The FDR AX53 user manual shows that the 'hand' symbol edged by the two parentheses turns off the Steady Shot function:

https://helpguide.sony.net/cam/1630/v1/en/contents/TP0000933269.html

I doubt that there'll be anyway to delete an imbedded menu item without hacking the firmware - which will never be a good idea because it could end up permanently disabling the camera or having to get it repaired by Sony.

User manuals are the best first avenue for researching menu options particularly by going to the manufacturer's product webpage for the camera and going to the online manual linked from that product's webpage.

Re the difference between the menus in the two cameras, do both cameras have the same firmware version installed? They should for a recent purchase because the last firmware updates for the FDR AX53 was in June 2016.

Looks like "destination." No idea what that means.

Aren't there display modes you can toggle through to show more or less detail? There are on my Sonys.

Do you have two setting for steady shot? It maybe the walking man with case is mild and a further setting stronger steady shot (maybe man running)? My AX100 and AX700 both have two settings.

@andyrpsmith  ... you are right. I've just checked my FDR AX100E and the running man symbol appears solo when Steady Shot is set to either Standard or Active, but the 'hand with double parentheses' and the running man appears when Steady Shot is set to off. It looks like there's a variation on this with the AX53 because the OP's image upload shows that the 'hand' icon has 'ACT' added to the 'hand' icon - presumably meaning active - something that doesn't happen with my AX100 with the last 3.0 firmware.

@JohnJ
I have the same camera, but I can't find your icon anywhere.
Can you kindly tell us where exactly - under which menu item - you discovered this icon?
Also the firmware number would be interesting (currently it is Ver. 1.02).
