Sony MiniDV Video Capture?

I have an old Sony TRV-950 MiniDV camera, and with a previous version of Sony Movie Studio Platinum on a MacBook Pro running Windows 7 via bootcamp... the "Capture Video" menu would open a dialog box allowing me to see & capture the output from that camera. Camera was connected directly to the MBP firewire port on the left side.

Now I'm using a new Alienware laptop with Windows 10 and I'm using the latest version (14.105) of Vegas Movie Studio Platinum... and when I use that same "Capture Video" menu, it only recognizes the onboard webcam even though my Sony TRV-950 is plugged in. Granted now it's plugged into a Mini Display port via a Firewire --> Mini Display adaptor.

Any thoughts on how I could get MSP to recognize my camera?

Without a firewire port no capture of MiniDV/HDV possible.

Has to be a real firewire connection.

Wow. Thanks.

So... Firewire is pretty much on its way out now, isn't it? Even Macs have replaced it with Thunderbolt or whatever.

With laptops... is there any way to add Firewire?

Or let me ask this another way... is there any other option for me to import this footage digitally... or must I bite the bullet and go D>A and A>D again using some other kind of interface?

Capturing through anything other than firewire will not be a true bit to bit digital capture, but there are other devices you can use with various types of compression or conversion.

Thanks. I still have my old Win7 bootcamp computer which works, but I was hoping to blow that up and do a clean install back to Mac. Guess I have to keep it around until I can import all my old tapes :-/

If the Mac has firewire, you can capture using Mac Software. It should work in PC Vegas.

Everything you need can be found at thrift stores and flea markets,, for almost nothing!

Thing is, one must learn to exercise patience.
