Time to Say Goodbye

I'd like to thank all the incredible people here who have helped me over the years and thank the people who don't even know how much they helped via searching the archives. Vegas pro 11 has been my NLE for several years, but now it's time to move on. More and more I've been developing my skills with Resolve 12.5. But I was still returning to Vegas to do some odds and ends. Now that I seen what they did with the new version 14 Beta, I won't need to continue with Vegas.

Best wishes to all,

John

Having just had a quick play with the Resolve 14 beta - I'm inclined to agree. Time to move on.

I have been in love with Vegas since version 6. Upgraded recently to VP14. Been experimenting with R12 myself, loaded R14b yesterday. Probably will never abandon completely Vegas but Magix has still lots to do to convince me to spend repeatedly more money on any new versions. The slowness of the timeline preview and the dysfunctional GPU rendering are showstoppers among others, these have been plaguing Vegas for a long time...

John - all the best to you on your journey! Why not drop in sometime and tell us how you are doing?

i actually started a thread over on 'offtopic', but i agree with a lot that's been written here as to why i'm leaving:

Vegas Pro was better for audio than Resolve, but DaVinci Resolve v14 now has all the audio capabilities I need. I don't think any of my projects will ever require 1000 audio tracks, but there you are.

John222 wrote on 4/26/2017, 11:01 AM

They also reduced the price of the full studio version to $299....

Currently Resolve 14 Beta is very buggy. It crashes on me when I try to add a third party OFX plugin to my clips. I do agree that with Resolve 14, a lot of NLE will have problem selling their product. They have even lowered their Resolve Studio price from $999 to $299, a $700 reduction. The customer support person wrote me that you pay once $299 and all future upgrades, as well as updates will be free, unless plan changes in which case users will be notified in advance. One cannot beat a $299 price for a professional NLE with dozen of OFX plugins.

I am in communication with BlackMagic pre-sale support. I am seriously thinking to also move to Resolve, after using Vegas since 2005. Migration to Resolve will preserve my OFX plugins investment, and system seems to be much more stable then Vegas. I was expecting MAGIX to take care of annoying bugs in Vegas which existed in it since years, but they have not done a good job at it. All those annoying bugs remain in Vegas.

DL-ed R12 today, installed and wanting to figure out my own curiosity and nosiness of what it is about.

Now I understand why people get Resolve. And now I know why I get VP14.

I like DaVinci Resolve, but not enough to change.

The most important Vegas limitation (for me) is the inability to storyboard / rough cut  by dragging clips, etc. around in the project media window to order them "manually" rather than by name, etc.   Resolve cannot do this either.   Premiere and Final Cut can, be they are not options for me.

Amen. After reading this thread I went to the Resolve website and got very excited at what I saw. For one thing it runs on linux which is becoming important to me. Then I dug deeper.

Resolve might be a top notch video editor but it's not about to replace Vegas if you have audio needs. I have audio needs (as well as video). Oh well.

Resolve 14, which is in beta release, has audio. However, these new audio features will be only in the Studio version, not the free Lite version. Even for testing Resolve Studio 14 Beta, you need dongle from Resolve 12.5. You are right about 12.5 is inferior to Vegas for audio.

However, read some reviews on the Internet. According to some reviews, The Linux version requires a $30K Blackmagic Surface together Resolve.

ushere wrote on 4/26/2017, 8:32 PM

you should really check your facts before posting - the studio version is aimed at collaborative work and incls more fx.:

Includes everything found in the free version plus multi user collaboration features that let editors, colorists, and sound engineers all work together on the same project at the same time, plus 3D tools, dozens of Resolve FX and more.

and you've always needed a dongle for studio - though this as about to change with 14.

i certainly wouldn't advise anybody to look at 14 at present - it's way too buggy. but then again, it is a BETA release.

btw:

It's always been technically possible to INSTALL the Linux version without panels.
However, the Resolve license dongle for Linux IS different from the Mac/Windows dongle. And the only way to get a Linux license dongle is to buy a Resolve Advanced panel set. That's because Linux Resolve does not support third party panels. So you need a Resolve Advanced panel set to use it properly. Although you could drive it via
keyboard/mouse, if you had a Linux dongle.

Probably a dumb question, but how do you "save-as" a project file in Resolve 14 so that I can put the project file in a specific directory? I tried Resolve 14 briefly and couldn't figure out how to do that. It's important to me because I need an entire project to be self contained in a directory so I can archive my shoots easily, hence with Vegas I save the .veg project file in the same folder as the media. I oddly couldn't see how to do that with Resolve 14.

@suhaib-siddiqi What bugs exactly?

As I think ushere was saying, this is not true.

Is this thread turning into a How to solve Resolve issues? I always considered discussing other software on a factory's forum rude.

EDIT: Sorry, I also meant to say competition software rather than "other".

Normally, Paul, I'd agree with you. However, people reading this might think that Vegas ain't so bad, or, the MAGIX Vegas guys are reading this thinking maybe we could or are doing better.

Having said all that, our esteemed Moderator might well be considering to pull the thread, with or without MAGIX input.

Usher, I wrote that I read in some reviews that Linux version requires Blackmagic Surface, therefore check first. In other words you repeated same but with detail. I appreciate the detail.

Check YouTube. There are some very good tutorials for the beginners of Resolve. I do not have links handy. I went through them 2 years ago when Resolve 12 was released as a free version.

I tried Beta 14. Whenever, I tried to add an effect from BC Continuum, Boris Red Universe, it crashed with error message that my video RAM was exhausted. Also, I had some random hangs and crashed while rendering. I have nVidia 16 GB video RAM. I reported this bug to Blackmagic. I uninstalled it re-installed the Resolve 12.5.5.

Won't close it in case someone wants to say goodbye to John222 👋 😢

But Paul-Fierlinger has a point. Please post further discussion about Resolve 14 in this OFF-TOPIC thread. And specific questions about usage of Resolve would really be better asked on their forum.
