Uploading a Vegas Pro 19 4K render to YouTube - slow YT upload speed

Dexcon wrote on 3/31/2022, 5:58 AM

As a novice YouTube uploader – I’m now uploading my second ever video – the upload seems to be going very, very slowly.  It’s an 8 minutes long 4K MP4 video and I believe that it meets YT’s recommended upload encoding settings other than the audio bit rate for stereo is set at 512 kbps rather than the recommended 384 kbps as per:

https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en&ref_topic=9257782

The MediaInfo report for the Vegas Pro 19 b550 render is:

On YT, the SD version uploaded reasonably quickly – maybe an hour – but the HD upload is now at about 5 hours and still going.  Goodness how long the 4K upload will take after the HD upload has finished.

From those who are experienced with YT uploading of 4K video, I'd be most appreciative to know if the long upload time seems to be normal and to be expected?  Many TIA.

@Dexcon Hi, i have 370 vids on YT, many are 20min long, for a yr or 2 i've been uploading 3840x2160, I used to set upload then go to bed, but it only took a couple of hrs, I got fibre super fast broadband a yr or 2 so i could upload 3840x2160, 20mins now takes 1/2hr-ish, It's better to upload when your country goes to sleep, that's why i used to upload at night. all my vids have always been AVC MP4, audio about 192kbs, i look n try match the orig media or whatever the default template suggests, 🤷‍♂️

perhaps try a test, i don't know if his will work for you, upload is always lower than download https://fast.com/#

It's 6pm here so quite a busy internet time & I've got a few tabs open at the moment. i'll try uploading a vid with higher audio bit rates & let you know if it makes any difference 👍

@Dexcon Did you use Vegas to create that file you posted the info of, if so what template,? Magix AVC/AAC ? i'll try recreate that & try an upload.

Former user wrote on 3/31/2022, 12:58 PM

@Dexcon Hi, rendered two files, Magix AVC/AAC 3840x2160, one 192kbs the the other 512kbs, both uploaded to YT about about the same time, 10mins-ish, there was no noticeable difference,

(a few minutes after upload finished) Both are now showing SD, HD & 4K

Sometimes YT takes a while before the blue HD, 4K symbols stop flashing, & even when they're still flashing if you click on the video & open it in YT it plays at 4k,

All this will depend on your PC, internet speed... i guess but basically i see no difference in upload between 192kbs && 512kbs, , 🤷‍♂️

Former user wrote on 3/31/2022, 1:40 PM

@Dexcon I noticed your vid was 25fps, mine above are 29.97,

so I recreated that file @ 25fps, audio 512kbs, the file size is 2.04GB, whereas mine were 1.38GB. I'd have thought less fps would create a smaller files size, 🤯🤷‍♂️

Upload took 14mins instead of 10-ish, as soon as the white upload box says complete you can refresh the page, I like to leave that page/YT open for a while tho just in case it's still doing 'stuff'

SD, HD & 4K complete a few minutes after upload complete

Be careful about what you name the video, on the pc or when uploading, YT bots might hold a video back for review if it has keywords in the title of the orig file or whatever you call it when uploading,

I once bought a new expensive machine, i called the video on my computer Tool Porn just for the laugh, i uploaded it to YT but changed the name on the YT upload dialogue box but it still took ages to upload, eventually i quite the upload, realised YT was looking at the orig name 'porn' & that was the problem, I renamed the file on my computer to a more friendly one & upload then to YT went fast without a hitch,

- your video looks like it has YT in the name, that might be a reason for slow upload while the bots analyse it, also if there's children in a vid you have to declare there's children & it can take a long time,

@Former user  ... Thank you so very much for all your comments and testing, it is very much appreciated.

The VP19 renders settings used were:

The YT recommendation is to have the video bit rate for 4K at between 35 - 45 Mbps which is why I made the bit rate settings as they are - and the nrender is 40.1 Mbps. To me this seemed quite a high setting. But I notice that your Mbps result is 24.2 Mbps though the settings that you added to your comment just over 3 hours ago was 36 Mbps. I wonder if the longer time to upload to YT was due to the higher Mbps rather than the audio bit rate.

It is now nearly 09:00 here and the YT upload is still reporting "Processing HD Version" - so that's about 16 hours uploading and that includes the entire night time here. An internet speed test I did a short while ago reported a DL speed of 54 Mbps and an UL speed of 16.6 Mbps. With the video being just under 2,400 Mb and assuming an overnight UL speed of 16 Mbps, the upload should take 150 seconds.

I don't think that there's anything contentious in the YT title. It is "4K - Steamrail Victoria’s Frankston line steam train shuttles - Sunday 27 March 2022". And YT have found no issues with copyright - it's got the clearance tick. The 'not for children' option was checked. You might be right about having YT included in the video title. It was included only to distinguish that render from a render for BD with a lower bit rate.

I've just hit the Publish button and I'll see what happens and let you know. The YT link is:

Unfortunately, it's still showing "Processing HD version".

EDIT: But on going to YT to watch it, it is in 4K - and it plays just fine. Yay!

Many thanks again for all your help.

Cheers

Conrad

If you use Voukoder and check the FastStart box, your upstream processing time will be much quicker.

Reason: With the moov atom at the beginning of the file, Youtube can start processing as soon as the upload has begun, rather than having to wait for the entire upload to complete before beginning processing.

I'm a little surprised that Magix AVC still doesn't have this option, aka 'web optimized.'

Former user wrote on 3/31/2022, 7:27 PM

@Dexcon No prob 👍

Yeah YT works in mysterious ways sometimes, just to rub salt in your wounds, tonight i threw together a dozen clips to make a 15mins video,

this is one of my Samsung phone clips

I normally render using the default Magix AVC/AAC 29.97fps 48,000-24,000,

On those first upload trials i was just trying the different Audio rates so left the frame rate at 29.97 but I think on that later upload that i tried at 25fps i also raised the bitrate to get closer to your op pic of 40mbs, sorry forgot to note that & prob why it was a bigger size file, doh! 🤦‍♂️

this is my normal choice that comes out closer to 24

the bitrate's a bit lower than my phone creates but i don't notice the difference on my 34" 4k screen & on YT it looks fine, the majority of my viewers used to say 1920x1080 was good enough, & most watch on laptops etc, so the res is plenty good enough

This is the file i uploaded,

After editing I started upload to YT, went to the loo, made a drink, created the thumbnail in GIMP then went to put the thumb nail on the YT upload dialogue & saw it was at 98% ! i thought uh? i must have dragged the wrong file on to YT, but no it was the correct file, upload took about 15mins, 🙋‍♂️🤸‍♂️😂

Like i say the only reason i ever get a long delayed upload is because of a title or description that the bots don't like. if the bots can't make a decision it goes to a human to watch & review, I've never had to go that far tho.

I haven't uploaded for a while so i've got a bunch of comments to reply to 🥱 1am here tho so might go to bed, prob is it'll be a bigger no to reply t tomorrow if i don't do some tonight 🤦‍♂️😂

@Dexcon Try renaming the file on your pc to something simple like Train, then try upload again to see ...

Dexcon wrote on 3/31/2022, 9:34 PM

@Former user  ... I added an edit to my last comment with the extra good news that the upload did work after hitting the Publish button and that it did puiblish in 4K. The link to it is also there, and I've now learnt what the embedding choices mean - I shouldn't have turned embedding off.

Oddly, 'Channel Content' on my YT account still shows 'Processing HD version' even though its already uploaded and appearing as 4K. I guess that the take-away is that the processing advice is not all that accurate.

Have a great night's sleep, and thanks again.

@Musicvid  ... thank you for the tip. I'll definitely give Voukoder a shot with the next one (which probably won't be for a month or so). That Voukoder gets round the upload problem is excellent. Cheers.

@Dexcon 🥱 Hi, just woke up, what do you mean 'embedding'?

Dexcon wrote on 4/1/2022, 4:34 AM

what do you mean 'embedding'?

@Former user  ... Just after starting the Create a new YT post and linking the video for uploading, one of the many choices offered thereafter - like 'Made for Children', chapters, Language, Licence, etc - is an option called 'Allow Embedding'. I didn't allow it and therefore if a link is included on another website such as this forum, as per the link to my YT video earlier in this thread, results in:

I've just found how to change that setting in YT to Allow Embedding. Now that I've allowed embedding, clicking on that YT link now results in the video being able to be played directly from this forum.

It's certainly been a day of discovery for me.

@Dexcon Thanks, yep i noticed that vid wasn't available, i had to watch it on YT, trial n error teaches us all 👍

Those settings i've never touched, don't fix what ain't broke type thing 😁👍
