Using Sound Forge with Vegas Pro Suite 19

Anthony-Hutchings wrote on 10/11/2021, 4:22 AM

I use sound forge quite a lot in my workflow when I want to correct audio - I find that using VST's in Vegas Pro causes it to slow down and crackle. However my question is, is there a way of leaving sound forge open and when you select 'open copy in Sound Forge' for it to open in the already open Sound Forge Program? It used to do this a while back (Vegas 15/16?) but now it opens a new copy of the program for every instance you want to edit. I have many VST's loaded and it takes Sound Forge a while to start. When you add this up during the day, it is wasting quite a lot of time!

I just tested both 'Open in ...' and 'Open copy in ...' in Vegas Pro 19 and in both cases a new instance of Sound Forge Pro (15) opened. but SFP opened very quickly - in just a few blinks of the eye. Same in Vegas Pro 16. I haven't got VP15 installed at the moment.

BTW, the last Suite version of Vegas Pro was Vegas Pro Suite 18. Vegas Pro 19 only has Vegas Edit, Vegas Pro and Vegas Post.

in both cases a new instance of Sound Forge Pro (15) opened.

That is caused by Sound Forge Pro's default "Multi-Instance" setting, which was initiated in SFP-14 build 111. It can be set back to the legacy 'Single-Instance' behavior in the 'Internal' menu (which is normally hidden). Click the link below for instructions.

Thank you so much - all sorted! This will save me ages - and lots of frustration. I'm really grateful!

Brilliant! Thank you - such a time & aggro saver. Why is such a setting hidden?
There is still an annoyance where Vegas has to minimised (even though Sound Forge has input focus) before Sound Forge will save the edited file back to Vegas (Pro 19). Seamless integration it isnt.

???... and why just not leave single-Instance as the default in the first place (which most folks seem to prefer), and have 'multi-instance' as a secondary option in the 'General' menu?

I find that using VST's in Vegas Pro causes it to slow down and crackle.

I think you would benefit by looking into what is causing the crackling, it is not normal. I have lowly onboard audio, and no such problem with VSTs. Are yous particularly demanding?

Start by telling us about your audio hardware, drivers, and driver selection in Prferences->Audio Device.

And thanks @rraud for pointing out that setting to me. I knew it had changed over the years, but didn't know there was a workaround.

I have similar experience with VST plugins in Vegas. In fact, anything more than a simple volume envelope and I do the audio in external audio editor or DAW. I tried several plugins by Native Instruments, Izotope... Even the factory plugins installed with Vegas exhibit this behavior, but usually less than third party plugins.

It happens with different audio devices. I would say the selected audio device makes no difference. Most of the time I use external audio interface and asio driver (UR44C). This setup works fine with several audio applications (Cubase, Wavelab, Dorico, RX7, SpectraLayers 8). They all work fine using the same vst plugins.

Vegas is great as video editor but when it comes to audio... I prefer to use other programs for that and not bother with vst plugins in Vegas.

No audio problems here with VP-16 (aside from the lack of side-chain support) but that's not a performance issue.

Even if you change parameters or bypass the plugin during playback?

rraud wrote on 10/13/2021, 1:21 PM

Some VSTs glitch when changing parameters in playback. Direct X plug-ins (the ones that can be loaded) are fine. OTOH, VP-9 is glitch-free with both DX and VST Fx formats.
